Fairfield University Welcomes New Associate Vice President of Public Safety

John DeAngelis will lead campus security operations beginning August 15, 2022.

Following an extensive national search, Fairfield University is pleased to announce that John DeAngelis has been named associate vice president of Public Safety, effective August 15, 2022.

In his new role, DeAngelis will manage the Department of Public Safety, and oversee day-to-day operations, and operations for university special events and shutdown periods. His responsibilities will include establishing standard and emergency policies and procedures, serving as public safety representative of the HAZMAT and emergency response team, managing the Security Protocol Plan as prescribed under state and federal mandates, and overseeing the university Crisis Response Team and Threat Assessment Team.

He is joining an exceptional team.”

For over 15 years, DeAngelis has held the position of assistant vice president and chief of public safety at Teachers College, Columbia University. His prior experience includes positions as municipal chief of police in California and Washington State, and as director of public safety and risk management for New York City based non-profit, International House. He has served as a consultant to the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST), and to the U.S. Department of Justice. De Angelis has also served on curriculum review committees and as a guest lecturer for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLET), as a guest lecturer for the International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP), and for the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM). DeAngelis is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School of Executive Education, Senior Executives in State and Local Government program, and holds a master of arts degree in management, a bachelor’s degree of public administration, and bachelor of science degree in business administration. John is also a graduate of FBI National Academy.
