The Stags will practice on the local, renowned course beginning this fall
Fairfield University has announced a partnership with Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield as the new home of the Stags’ men’s and women’s golf teams. The Stags will utilize Brooklawn’s 6,800-yard championship golf course, practice range, and other amenities for team practices beginning with the 2017-18 season.
“Brooklawn Country Club is an incredible course and facility to serve as the home of Fairfield University Golf,” said director of Athletics, Paul Schlickmann. “This partnership will undoubtedly enhance the student-athlete experience for our golf programs and bring added visibility to our institution. I would like to thank the many members of the Brooklawn community for their hard work and dedication that made this partnership a reality."
"We are pleased to welcome Fairfield University's men's and women's golf teams to our historic club and golf course," said Rick Ryan, president of Brooklawn Country Club. "We have a significant number of Fairfield alumni in our membership, and our partnership with the University is a win-win in the town we are proud to share with them.”
Brooklawn Country Club has been the home of the Fairfield Athletics Hall of Fame Golf Outing since the spring of 2016. The club will continue to play host for this annual event.
Led by second-year director of Fairfield Golf, Doug Holub, the Stags began practicing at Brooklawn upon returning to campus earlier this month. Fairfield Men’s Golf teed off its fall schedule on Sept. 8-9 at the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate. The women’s program hit the links in competition for the first time this season at the Dartmouth Invitational this past weekend.
“I have spent more than 20 years on golf courses in Connecticut and throughout the region, and Brooklawn Country Club measures up as one of the best in the Northeast,” Holub said. “Having a course to call home right here in the Town of Fairfield will be a tremendous benefit to our current and future student-athletes.”
Founded in 1895, and one of the very first clubs to be recognized by the United States Golf Association, Brooklawn is the only club in Connecticut to have hosted four USGA national championships, including the 1974 Junior Amateur, 1979 U.S. Women's Open, 1987 U.S. Senior Open, and 2003 Girls' Junior Championship.
