“What Accounting, Econ, Finance, and Management Students Need to Know,” October 3.
As part of the Dolan School Dean’s Lecture series, the School will host its first event on October 3 with industry leaders Owen G. Tharrington, managing director of Gridiron Capital, and Hal Schroeder, Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) board member and former partner at Carlson Capital. Tharrington and Schroeder will address not only the roles of accounting and finance, but the part economics and management play in the world of Alternative Investing. The lecture will be followed by a guided Q&A from Dean’s Lecture Committee members Danielle Izzo ’18, Keely Riel ’18, and Thomas Uriuoli ’19.
"The fact that we are able to showcase two individuals who are highly involved in the alternative investment arena, but who can also speak to the evolution of their careers from strict finance and accounting backgrounds to positions of leadership, is extremely important for Dolan students," said Mark Ligas, PhD, interim dean of the Charles F. Dolan School of Business. "Career development is not necessarily a linear function based on one’s starting point, thus our students are fortunate to have opportunities for learning and engagement with these professionals."
Owen G. Tharrington, CPA, currently serves as a managing director at Gridiron Capital, a limited liability company. Before Tharrington worked for Gridiron Capital, he served as vice president and controller of Saugatuck Capital Company where he was responsible for financial and tax reporting functions, as well as leveraged buyout transactions. Prior to working at Saugatuck Capital he spent four years at KPMG LLP in the audit and tax departments working with public and private companies.
R. Harold (Hal) Schroeder, CPA, is a board member of the FASB. Prior to his current role, Schroeder was a partner at Carlson Capital, L.P., a Dallas-based alternative asset management firm, where he focused on the financial services industry, including both public and private companies.
The Dean’s Lecture Series features business leaders from various industries who share their experience with students. Students interested in attending the event on Tuesday October 3, at 7 p.m. in the Dolan School of Business Dining Room should register on OrgSync.
