Basketball Season Kicks Off

The Fairfield men’s basketball team opens its home schedule this weekend, taking the court at Webster Bank Arena for three games as a part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The Stags opened their 2014-15 slate with a win over crosstown rival Central Connecticut State before trekking to Cameron Indoor Stadium to meet No. 4 nationally-ranked Duke. Now in the fourth season under Head Coach Sydney Johnson, Fairfield will challenge Wofford on Friday (7 p.m.), Sam Houston State on Saturday (7 p.m.) and South Dakota on Sunday (2 p.m.). The Stags won a total of 48 games, including 24 home contests, in Johnson’s first three campaigns at Fairfield.

Fairfield women’s basketball also opens its home schedule this weekend after a three-game road swing to tip-off the 2014-15 campaign. The Stags will welcome Butler to Alumni Hall on Saturday (1 p.m.) and entertain Ivy League foe Cornell on Monday (7 p.m.). Fairfield went 22-11 last winter, marking the fourth 20-win season under Head Coach Joe Frager and 10th in program history. The Stags are riding a six-game home winning streak after posting a 10-4 home record in 2013-14. Overall, Fairfield is 66-26 at home in Frager’s seven seasons on the sidelines.
