Nancy Spielberg on "Creation of Israeli Air Force," Bennett Lecture, April 4

On Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at 7:30 p.m., documentary filmmaker Nancy Spielberg will discuss the Jewish experience and documentary filmmaking when she delivers Fairfield University’s Carl and Dorothy Bennett Lecture in Judaic Studies. Free and open to the public, the event will take place at the Quick Center for the Arts.

Spielberg’s lecture, Flight for Life: Jewish Heroism and the Creation of the Israeli Air Force, will focus on the subject of her recent documentary, Above and Beyond, the story of Jewish airmen who smuggled planes out of the U.S. to fight in Israel’s War of Independence.

In addition to Above and Beyond, which recently won the audience award at more than 20 film festivals, Spielberg is the executive producer of Sophie Sartain’s documentary, Mimi and Dona, Who Will Write Our History, the story of Warsaw Ghetto Jews who wrote and buried their documents and stories in Polish soil before being killed by the Nazis, and On The Map, a documentary by filmmaker Dani Menkin.

Spielberg began her filmmaking career assisting her brother, Steven Spielberg on his early films as cast and crew. She served as consultant on the Oscar-winning documentary, Chernobyl Heart, and is executive producer of Elusive Justice: The Search for Nazi War Criminals, which aired nationally on PBS.

An accomplished businesswoman, fundraiser and philanthropist, Spielberg is also founder and co-founder of several charities including A Bid for Charity, Children of Chernobyl, Project Sunshine and the American branch of The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

Through the generosity of Carl Bennett, the lecture has brought renowned speakers to the University, including Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel.

Reservations are requested. Please call the Bennett Center for Judaic Studies at 203-254-4000, ext. 2066 or bennettcenter@fairfield.edu.
