Fairfield in St. Peter's Clash
Another day, another road game for the men's basketball team as it will head to Jersey City for a Sunday afternoon match up with Saint Peter's University. The game will tip off at 2 pm. Fairfield brings an 11-10 overall record and a 3-6 MAAC mark into the game, while the Peacocks own a 6-13 record with a 1-7 conference slate.
The Stags coasted to a 71-37 win over Marist College on last Thursday, enjoying their biggest margin of victory this season. The previous high was a 21-point decision over Canisius College in early January. Josip Mikulic paced Fairfield in this win by tying his career high with 16 points, most of which came off three three-point field goals.
The freshman played a key role in blowing the game open. The Stags held an eight-point lead in the first half before netting five three-point field goals over six possessions to bolster their lead to 19 points with four minutes left in the half. Mikulic has three of those five three pointers, including the first two long-range jumpers.
Amadou Sidibe secured a game-high seven rebounds for the Stags, his third straight game as the team's top rebounder. The freshman leads the team with five-plus rebounds per game, and places ninth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Derek Needham remains the team's top scorer with a 14.2 scoring average which puts him in the top 10 for scoring in the MAAC. The senior reached a prestigious milestone in the Marist game when he dished off his 500th career assist. He has 73 assists on the season, just five off the team leader. Desmond Wade, who netted 13 points against the Red Foxes, leads the team with 78 assists.
The Peacocks come off a 90-71 loss to Iona on Friday night which dropped the team to a 6-13 overall record and a 1-8 MAAC mark. Chris Burke tallied his first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Blaise French added 14 points for the Peacocks. Saint Peter's never led in the game and trailed by as many as 21 points during the contest. Desi Washington leads the team in scoring this season with a 14.1 scoring average. Yvon Raymond is next in line at 10.1 points per game but leads the team in rebounding with 5.1 caroms per contest.
