Julie Rubio, PhD

Presented by The Center for Catholic Studies at Fairfield University, the 7:30 p.m. lecture, “Catholic Theology: What’s Gender Got To Do With It?” is free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, the 25th Annual Christopher F. Mooney, S.J., Lecture will be delivered by Julie Rubio, professor of social ethics at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University. Her lecture, “Catholic Theology: What’s Gender Got To Do With It?” looks at the changing social landscape and how the Catholic teaching on gender may not be as clear cut as it appears.

In her presentation, Rubio will discuss how issues such as gender fluidity, transgender rights, marriage equality, feminism, and toxic masculinity are breaking through the chains of traditional gender norms and causing these norms to be questioned. Meanwhile, the Catholic Church is known for holding steadfast to traditional gender roles, criticizing "gender theory," and praising the "genius of women.” But is Catholic teaching on gender as clear cut as it seems? And what would happen if Catholics engaged the diversity of gender studies? Dr. Rubio's lecture will illuminate the conflict and point toward possibilities for conversation and common ground.

Dr. Rubio completed her undergraduate degree at Yale University, where she earned her BA in political science. She continued her studies and earned a master of theological studies from Harvard Divinity School, and a PhD in religion and social ethics from the University of Southern California. Currently, as a professor of social ethics at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, California, her interests focus on bringing the resources of Catholic social thought, moral theology, and social science to issues related to marriage, family, sex, and gender.

Dr. Rubio is the author of four books including Family Ethics: Practices for Christians (Georgetown, 2010) and Hope for Common Ground: Mediating the Personal and the Political in a Divided Church (Georgetown, 2016). Her many essays have appeared in The Washington Post and America, as well as in academic journals such as Theological Studies, the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, and the Journal of Political Theology, Rubio is a board member of National Catholic Reporter, Horizons, the Journal of Catholic Social Thought, and the Catholic Theological Society of America. Her current project is titled: Gender, Catholicism, and the Family.
