More than one hundred Fairfield faculty, spiritual leaders, and presidents and delegates from academic institutions across the U.S. attended an Inaugural Luncheon on Friday, October 20, 2017, to express their congratulations to Mark R. Nemec, PhD, Fairfield University's ninth President. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Barone Campus Center’s Oak Room was filled with enthusiastic guests who were eager to celebrate the new President’s investiture.

The elegant green and silver décor of the Oak Room illuminated an inviting and comfortable atmosphere for guests to mingle and enjoy a delectable spread of chicken francese, orange-scented rice, assorted wraps, salad, dessert, and more. While the food and company were definitely a highlight, the President’s inauguration remained at the forefront of discussions, and those in attendance were eager to voice their excitement about the day’s main event.

“Today is a celebration of history and tradition at Fairfield University,” said Marc Camille, EdD, president of Albertus Magnus College. “But more meaningfully, it is about a new beginning. I’ve spent about 18 years working at Jesuit institutions, and my own inauguration at Albertus Magnus is in May, so I’m taking all of this in and am really excited to be here in support of Dr. Nemec.”

Many in attendance expressed feelings similar to those of President Camille. The sense of pride and passion for Fairfield radiated throughout the room and was sure to remain present throughout the day.

Frank Carroll ‘89, chairman of Fairfield’s Board of Trustees and former FUSA president gushed, “This is a great day and an exciting new chapter for Fairfield. I’m delighted to be part of it and extremely optimistic about the future of our Jesuit Catholic University.”

The most joy was exuded by current Fairfield faculty, who seem ready to advance President's Nemec's vision for the University.

Mary Frances Malone, PhD, associate vice president for Academic Affairs said, “It's a special occasion at Fairfield University, and we’re all very excited about inaugurating and investing President Nemec. The faculty had a wonderful discussion with him yesterday, and we’re all looking to move Fairfield ahead as the premier modern Jesuit Catholic University.”

The overall atmosphere of the day was best summarized by Christine Siegel, PhD, interim provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, “It could not be a more exciting day. I think we are blessed to have such a beautiful, sunny day that reflects the mood that everyone is in. Overall, it’s just a good time.”
