Men's Soccer Head to Championship Game Sunday, Stags Field Hockey Wins 2017 MAAC, and More

MAAC Championship play comes to campus throughout the month of November

For the second time in the past three seasons, Fairfield University Field Hockey has reached the top of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as the 2017 MAAC Champions. The Stags defeated top-seeded Monmouth to capture the conference crown by a score of 2-1 this past Sunday in West Long Branch, N.J.

Graduate student Hannah Pike was named the Most Valuable Player of the MAAC Championship after scoring three goals in the semifinals and both tallies in the title-clinching triumph against the Hawks. She was joined by Jaclyn Gallagher ’18, Erin Buckley ’18 and Cassie Hughes ’19 on the All-Championship Team.

"We battled through some tough opponents early in the year – including three ranked teams – but we knew that it would get us ready for this moment,” said Head Coach Jackie Kane ’87 following Sunday’s victory. “I'm so proud of how hard and well this team played."

With the win, Fairfield earned an automatic bid into the 2017 NCAA Championship. The Stags traveled to Boston University to face the #20 nationally-ranked Terriers in the opening round on Wednesday, where they saw their championship season come to a close by a score of 5-0.

This Sunday, the MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship will be decided on campus as Fairfield hosts Rider in the tournament final on Lessing Field. After playing Quinnipiac to a scoreless draw for 110 minutes on Thursday evening in the semifinal round, the Stags advanced to Sunday’s championship match in a penalty kick shootout. Diego Casielles ’20, Matt McGlinchey ’21 and Jonathan Uy ’18 all converted for Fairfield, while Gordon Botterill ’21 made three saves in the shootout to seal the victory. The Stags, led by 2017 MAAC Coach of the Year Carl Rees, won the MAAC Regular Season Championship with a 7-1-2 conference record as a part of an 11-4-3 overall mark to date.

Fairfield Volleyball has also added another championship to its résumé, winning the MAAC Regular Season Championship for the third consecutive season under Head Coach Todd Kress and the 17th time in the last 22 campaigns. The Stags are currently 21-6 overall and 16-0 in the MAAC, carrying a 17-match winning streak into the final weekend of the regular season on Nov. 11-12 at Alumni Hall.

Fairfield will host the 2017 MAAC Volleyball Championship from George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall on Nov. 17-19. As the top seed in the tournament, the Stags will begin their postseason in the semifinal round on Saturday, Nov. 18.
