Fairfield Hosts the 2015 CASE ASAP Conference

Fairfield’s Student Alumni Association and Stags Give Back have been having all kinds of success lately. Not only did they host the 2015 CASE ASAP District 1 Conference on Fairfield’s campus, but one of our own, Colleen McGinn from the Office of Alumni Relations was selected as one of the annual conference’s Outstanding Advisors. This is the first time the conference was held on campus and our students could not have been more excited. Host to 193 student delegates and their advisors, from 16 different colleges and universities in New England, our student groups arranged for a weekend of interesting activities for all.

CASE is the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. CASE ASAP (which SAA and Stags Give Back fall under) is a subdivision of CASE, which is composed of student alumni associations, student foundations and similar organizations at more than 300 CASE member institutions. Its goal is to foster and enhance student involvement in all areas of advancement – from alumni relations and communications to fundraising, marketing and related areas. CASE ASAP also supports the advancement profession by alerting students and their advisors of advancement opportunities, resources and career paths.

By being a member of CASE ASAP, our Student Alumni Association and Stags Give Back members are given the opportunity to network with and learn from other student advancement programs from institutions all across the globe. This program allows our students to learn from a wide range of schools similar to them (private, smaller institutions) and different (such as the larger, public universities). They see a variety of programs that are offered and learn about membership/recruitment methods, leadership styles, etc. It also allows Fairfield to share their programs with their peers by presenting sessions of their own. It’s a huge learning and networking opportunity.

Colleen McGinn reports, “Some of our best programs – some of the ones we’re the most proud of – started with a foundation built at these conferences. It also helps to build ties among members, surrounded by hundreds of your peers who are all involved in and have a passion for the same organization as you do.”  Being a member allows us to bring and showcase the best of Fairfield’s Student Advancement organizations (both the programs and the members) to our peers and allows us to learn how to get better at what we do.”

Sessions were offered on such topics as Internal and External Programs, Membership, Organization Structure, Retention and Recruitment, Social Media and Professional Development. A special session put on by Julie Tuozzoli, manager of employer relations & alumni career development, and Stephanie Gallo, from the Career Planning Center, covered everything to know about LinkedIn. Our SAA & Stags Give Back Past Presidents also did a panel called “Real World 101” on life after college.

The CASE Board Members did a presentation on “Managing Your Career in Advancement” and Tyler McClain, associate director of leadership and professional development, Career Planning Center, did a keynote session on “Developing the Leader Within” for all delegates. Karen Donoghue, dean of students, was the Keynote Speaker for the conference (as she is also one of the founding presidents of SAA) and spoke on “Finding Your Footprints In The Sand.”

The conference was put together entirely by students. Conference co-chairs Sarah Birney ’15, Monica Sciacca ’16, Abby Brennan ’17, Marie Magliocco ’18 and their subcommittee members worked as a team to make everything happen. Marie Magliocco ’18 explained, “This conference was a great chance to meet and work with students from all different schools to really expand my knowledge. I am now proud to be able to offer Fairfield so much more and make improvements by bringing new and unique ideas to the table.”

The students all expressed enthusiasm for the event and a great feeling of accomplishment. Sarah Birney put it well when she said, “I feel privileged to go to a school that recognizes this and supported our efforts.”
