"Poetry for Peace" Jan. 30

On Friday, January 30 Fairfield University will invite dozens of budding young poets to read from their award-winning poetry at the seventh annual Poetry for Peace Contest Winners' Celebration. The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

A record number of 1,200 poems from Bridgeport and Fairfield students were submitted to the competition, which is sponsored by Fairfield University's Writing Center, the English Department, the Connecticut Writing Project-Fairfield, and the MLK Coordinating Committee. This event is held in conjunction with the MLK Holiday Observation Week, a weeklong celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s work and legacy.

The winning poems are published in a book, which will be distributed to the children and their families at the event.

The contest is designed to encourage discussion of how the imaginative and original language of poetry relates to the creation of peace and gives young writers a chance to express their own concepts of peace through the creative act of writing.

Co-Chair Dr. Beth Boquet, professor of English, said, “These past few months have seen voices rise up in protest of the violence that has become too routine, too familiar, in our lives, in our communities, in our nation, and in the world. People want to gather, and they want to be heard. We are grateful to have Poetry for Peace as one forum where our communities can come together to harness the power of language to bring better worlds into being.”

A committee of faculty, staff, and students are currently judging the entries. Carol Ann Davis, assistant professor of English, is also Co-Chair of this event.
