Malcolm Gilbert transfers to Fairfield

Malcolm Gilbert, a 6-10 center from Smyrna, Del., will transfer to Fairfield University and will enroll for the Spring, 2013 semester. Gilbert transferred to Fairfield University from the University of Pittsburgh. He will be eligible to play basketball for the Stags next season. He is the brother of current Fairfield University forward Marcus Gilbert. The announcement was made by Head Coach Sydney Johnson this afternoon.

“Our coaching staff has taken a very selective approach to our recruiting efforts,” Coach Johnson said. “In addition to being a great student, Malcolm complements our team by adding depth to our front court. We look forward to Malcolm joining our team and making us a well-rounded basketball team."

Gilbert was a redshirt sophomore for the Panthers and did not play in any games during the 2012-13 season. As a freshman, the center appeared in 19 games and played 93 minutes as a reserve. His first appearance as a Panther occurred in the Long Beach State game. He enjoyed his best overall game against St. Francis, Pa. with two points, three rebounds, and 16 minutes. He was a Big East Academic All-Star in 2011-12.

He is a 2011 graduate of Academy of the New Church where he helped the team to a 21-6 overall record and the number eight position in the state rankings. He averaged 6.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks per game in his final year at the Academy of the New Church. He was an All-Friends League honorable mention and became a 2011 McDonald's All-America nominee as a senior.

The Fairfield University men's basketball team currently owns a 10-5 overall record in its second season under Coach Johnson. The Stags posted its third-straight 20-win season with a 22-15 record and advanced to postseason play for the third straight campaign with a bid to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament in 2011-12.M
