Mountain "Removal" in the Appalachians

Two environmental activists, Elise Keaton and Paul Corbit Brown, will present “What’s Wrong with Mountaintop Removal?” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at the Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J. Presentation Room. Their talk is free and open to the campus community and the public.

The event is sponsored by the History Department and the Humanities Institute of the College of Arts and Sciences, and co-sponsored by the Politics Department, and the programs in Black Studies and Environmental Studies, Ignatian Residential College and Service for Justice Residential College.

Keaton is an attorney who grew up in Raleigh County, West Virginia, and is now the fundraising director for Keeper of the Mountains. Brown is a solar electrician, professional photographer, and mountaintop removal activist who is installing solar panels on Kayford Mountain for the foundation. Their focus is on the community, health, and environmental damage being done to the Appalachian region by the practice of mountaintop removal. Their talk will also touch on the politics of energy in 2013 and social and economic justice issues.
