FAIRFIELD, Conn. (October 21, 2015) — Powerhouse jazz trio Children of the Light featuring Danilo Pérez on piano, John Patitucci on bass and Brian Blade on drums and will take the stage at Fairfield University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at 8 p.m., Thursday, November 19, 2015.

Children of the Light released their debut recording little over a month ago on September 18, 2015, yet Pérez, Patitucci and Blade have been playing together for more than a decade. In 2000, these three virtuosos became a part of the Wayne Shorter Quartet, supporting legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter. They have also continued their individual careers as leaders of their own projects and groups.
Now, these musical soulmates step forward as a trio for the first time in celebration of Shorter’s influence and compositions. The name of the trio is inspired by Shorter’s “Children of the Night,” a piece that first appeared on Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers’ Mosaic in 1961. They changed “Night” to “Light” because they aspire to bring more light into the world with their music.
Each of these renowned musicians has made his mark in the world of jazz, including Grammy awards and nominations. As a trio, they have a fearlessness in their approach that stretches the traditions of the trio in both obvious and subtle ways. Pérez says, “We have developed a language we call ‘zero gravity,’ a way of interacting, of orchestrating the music that we want to continue exploring and developing.” Their three-way conversation is an incredible and intense collective improvisation.
