The Bethlehem Experience
Fairfield University Glee Club to offer festive holiday ‘collage concert’ on Dec. 5 & 6
The Fairfield University Glee Club with Festival Orchestra will present “The Bethlehem Experience,” a holiday concert of sacred and secular music, at 8 p.m., Friday, December 5, and 2 p.m., Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The concert will feature performances by the full Glee Club, conducted by Carole Ann Maxwell, D.S.M., the all-male a cappella group The Bensonians, the all-female chamber group Sweet Harmony and The Chamber Singers. General admission tickets are $10, $6 for students.
The Glee Club is billing the performance as a ‘collage concert,’ crafted with thought-provoking musical journeys that create deep connections between the performers and listeners. The concert will marry music and poetry in a seamless blend of classical and popular, old and new. Among the many works slated to be performed are: German composer Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria,” American composer Gwyneth Walker’s “Rejoice,” which is a musical setting of three traditional carols, and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” arranged by Jerry Rubino. The concert opens in dramatic fashion with a festive processional based on a medieval Latin poem, Lara Hoggard’s “Personent Hodie.”
The Fairfield University Glee Club, founded in 1947, is the oldest club on the Fairfield University campus. The members share a deep love for music and a common desire to achieve excellence in it. The Glee Club numbers over 130 undergraduate and graduate singers. It is the parent organization of two additional choral ensembles: Sweet Harmony and The Bensonians. The Fairfield University Chamber Singers is the first mixed choir on campus. Founded in 1982 by Dr. Maxwell and Dr. Orin Grossman, it is an ensemble of auditioned singers, whose advanced repertoire, both sacred and secular, have led to a wide acclaim in the area.
