Dr. Jessica Alicea-Planas is a community and public health nurse who has worked in various low-resourced communities both locally and abroad for the last twenty years. Her primary area of interest encompasses working with vulnerable and marginalized populations, with a focus on chronic disease management, health literacy and health education. She received her BSN degree from the University of Connecticut, an MPH from Southern Connecticut State University and returned to UCONN to complete her PhD. She is also a certified health education specialist (CHES). For the last six years she has been part of faculty-led public health nursing service learning trips to Nicaragua and is has worked on various community-based participatory projects in both urban Managua and rural coffee farm regions in Jinotega. As an active member of the CT chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, Dr. Alicea-Planas is very involved in on-going diversity related initiatives within the Egan School of Nursing, Fairfield University and the greater Bridgeport community.
