Management of Technology

Don't Just Earn More. Be More.

Fairfield University's Master of Science in the Management of Technology (MSMOT) endows students with the necessary knowledge, creativity, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills to successfully manage technology enterprises of all kinds. This is accomplished by the broad MSMOT curriculum, which includes courses from the MBA program in the Charles F. Dolan School of Business. The program is focused on the use of management and business principles for projects related to technology.

Upon graduation, you’ll have the confidence and skills to meet the most demanding management challenges businesses face: management of human physical resources, management of design and manufacturing, management of information systems, and systems engineering.

Message from the Director

Dear Prospective Student,

Strategic management of technology helps position companies in fast-paced markets, influences crucial decision-making, and improves the likelihood of corporate business success. As required by the business interests in modern, technology-dependent enterprises, education in this discipline instructs and trains engineers and scientists, and those with extensive experience in a technology environment, in the management of such functions as:

  • Technology research and development
  • Product design and manufacturing
  • Management of human and physical resources
  • Information and data analysis
  • Systems engineering

Fairfield's M.S. in the Management of Technology program provides the skill set that engineers need to best serve their industry and business concerns. As a student enrolled in the program, you'll work with faculty who have hands-on experience in the areas they teach. Many head their own companies, and all bring to the classroom genuine workplace experiences for discussion, where issues of ethics and justice are intertwined into the curriculum.

In addition, you'll have ample opportunities for industry experience through internships and capstone projects that involve carrying knowledge to the workplace and bringing back lessons from the workplace. You'll work with students and faculty who have a passion for the discipline, motivation and eagerness to learn and teach, and appreciation of the opportunities for learning that Fairfield makes available to all students.

Interested? Feel free to explore the possibilities of advanced study in engineering at Fairfield University, and feel free to e-mail me to either set up an appointment or to clarify any questions you may have about the Master of Science in the Management of Technology.

5-year Management of Technology

Engineering management is a multidisciplinary field that integrates all engineering disciplines offered by Fairfield University with technology management, systems and business. This program broadens your academic options and allows you to pursue a combination in any of our existing BS engineering degrees with a Master of Science in the Management of Technology in just five years.

This combination enables students not only to understand engineering, management and business concepts, but also to understand their integration and how the intersection distinctively shapes our world and their careers.

Fairfield University engineering students may request a change of status from the undergraduate to the undergraduate/graduate combined plan of study at any point after the following conditions are met:

  • Completed 60 credits towards the BS in an engineering discipline
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Have approval of the department chair

Frequently Asked Questions

When are applications due?

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admission Committee.

Do I need to take the GREs?

The GREs are not required.  We do look closely at your academic record and other application materials. Generally, we like to see that you have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. If your GPA is lower than 3.0 but you would like us to consider your application, you may include with your application a statement that explains your GPA and why you are confident you will be able to maintain the required 3.0 GPA in your graduate studies.

How much does it cost?

Tuition and fees for Fairfield's graduate programs

Do I have to be a full-time student

Our programs are designed to accommodate students who want to attend either on a full-time or part-time basis. Students who are fully employed will find the scheduling of our courses compatible with their work requirements.

When are courses offered?

Most of our courses are offered in the evening and a few are offered on the weekends. Weekday courses generally meet once a week for three hours. Weekend courses tend to be full day courses that meet for four or five weekends or weekend days over the semester.

What is the average class size?

We keep our classes small.  The typical maximum class size is 20, but class sizes range from less than 12 to 20.

Do I need to have earned an undergraduate degree in engineering to be eligible for admission?

Our students come from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds, which adds to the richness of our interactions in class. An undergraduate degree specifically in engineering is not required, but exposure to technology through employment is useful.

How long does it take to complete the degree?

For students who attend part-time, the time will vary based on how many courses are taken at a time. Students who attend full-time take 9 credits each semester and can complete the program in 2 years. All students are required to complete their degree within 6 years after they begin their first course.
