Introduction

The Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies offers an excellent blend of both theoretical knowledge and clinical experience. Throughout the nursing program, students gain clinical experiences at area hospitals, Community Health and Homecare Agencies, school-based health centers, and private practice organizations. Graduate students are in the field beginning in the second year of full-time study.

The Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies graduate program offers the Master of Science in Nursing and the Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees with six distinct tracks: Family Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthesia, Nurse Midwife, Nursing Leadership, and Post Masters DNP. The course of study fulfills academic requirements toward certification as a family nurse practitioner, psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, or clinical nurse leader. The faculty encourages students to use and build upon past education and experiences. The Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies has long been recognized for its commitment to individualizing instruction and educational experiences.

The course of study for MSN and DNP students reflects the school's philosophy, is organized according to a clearly articulated framework, and is designed to help students achieve the terminal objectives.

Policy Regarding Transfer Credits

In accordance with Fairfield University policy regarding transfer credits, graduate students in the Marion Peckam Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies may transfer credits from another University under the following conditions:

  • A maximum of 6 credits will be approved for transfer.
  • No courses with grades less than "B" will qualify for transfer.
  • Credit will be granted only for work completed at accredited institutions.
  • Only credit hours, not grades, will transfer.
  • Any course taken at another institution must be approved by the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies.
  • Official transcripts must be forwarded to the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies.

Matriculation/Continuation

To remain in good academic standing, a student must achieve and maintain a 3.00 cumulative quality point average.  A student whose cumulative quality point average falls below 3.00 in any semester is placed on academic probation for the following semester.  Students on academic probation must meet with their academic advisors to make program adjustments to their course load. If, at the end of the probationary semester, the student's overall average is again below 3.00, he or she will be dismissed.

Effective January, 2015, a student who earns a B- for an individual course will be placed on academic probation. If a student earns two grades of B- in one semester or a second grade of B- in any semester thereafter, they will be dismissed from the program. A student who earns a grade lower than a B- for any course will be dismissed from the program.

Standards for Admission & Progression

At Fairfield University Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies, students are required to successfully complete clinical practica involving direct patient care. By accepting admission in the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies, the student understands the program eligibility and progression requirements.

I. Disability Statement

Consistent with its mission and philosophy, Fairfield University Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies does not discriminate on the basis of disability. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the University will assist students in making reasonable accommodations that allow an otherwise qualified student with a disability to meet essential eligibility requirements in order to participate in its programs. Candidates for the nursing program must be able to meet minimum standards for clinical practice, with or without reasonable accommodations. To receive accommodations on the basis of disability, the student must self-identify, provide documentation of the disability, and request accommodation from Disability Support Services. The decision regarding appropriate accommodations will be based on the specifics of each case. Accommodations must specifically address the functional limitations of the disability. An accommodation will not be made in those situations where the accommodation itself would fundamentally alter the nature of the program, cause undue hardship on the school, or jeopardize the health or safety of others. II. Eligibility Requirements

The curricula leading to degrees in nursing from Fairfield University requires students to possess essential non-academic skills and functions required to engage in clinical practice. It is within the sole determination of Fairfield University and the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies to assess and determine whether a student meets these skills and functions. Eligibility Requirements for participation and completion in the nursing program shall include, but are not limited to, the following six capabilities:

Critical Thinking

Critical thinking ability sufficient for clinical judgment; student must be able to examine, interpret, analyze, and synthesize material for problem solving and evaluation of patient situations and own performance.

  • Ability to assess, plan, establish priorities, implement and evaluate patient outcomes.
  • Ability to calculate appropriate dosages for specific medications.
  • Ability to use good judgment in establishing priorities and making appropriate decisions in client care.

Interpersonal & Communication

Relationship & communication abilities appropriate for interacting sensitively with individuals, families, and groups from a variety of social, cultural, and intellectual backgrounds. Ability to accurately and clearly communicate appropriate information regarding patient status and response to care, both orally and in writing.

  • Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients/families and members of the healthcare team.
  • Ability to gather and record patient data concerning history, health status and response to care.
  • Ability to give and follow verbal and written reports and directions to patients, families, and members of the health care team.

Sensory Abilities

Ability to observe, identify, and obtain information in order to assess, plan, provide and evaluate nursing interventions; student must possess adequate sensory abilities or be able to demonstrate appropriate and safe compensation for deficits.

  • Visual acuity necessary to observe physical changes in health status, prepare and administer medications, and gather reference material and patient data from written and digital sources.
  • Auditory ability to differentiate normal and abnormal heart, lung, & bowel sounds.
  • Tactile ability to differentiate temperature and anomalies of the skin, as well as unsafe patient care devices.
  • Cognitive ability sufficient to read and understand directions, assignments, and patient documents.

Motor Skills and Mobility

Sufficient mobility, including the gross and fine motor skills needed to provide safe and competent nursing care, both routine and emergency.

  • Sufficient motor skills necessary to perform physical care such as ambulation, positioning, and assist with activities of daily living as needed.
  • Fine motor skills needed for basic assessment such as palpation, auscultation, and percussion.
  • Mobility sufficient to carry out patient care procedures such as suctioning, positioning, and drawing up medication into a syringe.

Emotional Stability

Emotional stability for providing care safely to patients and their families within a rapidly changing and often stressful healthcare environment; the ability to monitor and identify one's own and others' emotions, and use the information to guide thinking and actions.

  • Integrity needed to make ethical decisions and honor the professional code of nursing.
  • Emotional ability to maintain calm in a crisis and emergency situation.
  • Ability to develop mature relationships with the health care team and modify behavior in response to constructive feedback.

Physical Health and Abilities

Physical health and stamina sufficient to provide care to diverse patient populations.

  • Sufficient energy and ability to manage a typical patient assignment in a variety of settings for a full seven hour clinical day.
  • Physical health necessary to care for those who are immuno-compromised, incapacitated, and/or otherwise vulnerable.

Advisement & Registration

Advisement

The Faculty of the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies believes that a strong advisement system is a critical component of a student's educational experience and an integral part of the faculty role. In light of this belief, each student is assigned to one of the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies full-time faculty members for advisement.

Students are encouraged to use their advisors effectively. Advisors can help students do long-range program planning, understand the curriculum design and course pre-requisites, and clarify career goals. Students also should meet with their advisors to discuss the practicum/clinical courses; advisors can explain deadlines and procedures related to these courses and can help students complete any applications that may need to be submitted prior to enrolling in them. Students must meet with their advisors early in their last semester of enrollment to be sure all requirements for graduation are in order.

In the graduate program, each track is coordinated by a faculty member who is currently practicing in that specialty. Track coordinators advise students in their specialty and arrange practicum placements.

 

Registration

The following registration policies and procedures apply to all students in the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies. Students must consult with their advisors to ensure curriculum planning. All faculty are accessible through voice mail and e-mail.

  • Students should make an appointment for advisement each semester with their academic advisor to go over their curriculum plan and obtain a PIN number.
  • Students will be notified by email each semester regarding the start date for registration and online registration procedures.
  • All professional and health requirements must be met before beginning clinical.

Academic Policies

Grading Policies: Graduate Students

Effective January, 2015:

  • A student whose overall grade point average falls below 3.00 in any semester is placed on probation for the following semester. If the overall grade point average is again below 3.00 at the end of that semester, the student will be dismissed from the program. 
  • A student who earns a B- for an individual course will be placed on academic probation.  If a student earns two grades of B- in one semester or a second grade of B- in any semester thereafter, they will be dismissed from the program.
  • A student who earns a grade lower than a B- for any course will be dismissed from the program.

 Nurse Anesthesia Student Progression Requirements 

  • Nurse Anesthesia students are required to maintain an overall grade point average of a B (3.00). If the GPA falls below 3.00 in any semester the student is placed on probation for the following semester and has 1 semester to bring GPA above 3.0. If the overall grade point average is again below 3.00 or the GPA falls below 3.0 a second time, the student will be dismissed from the program. 
  • A student is allowed to earn ONE “B-” in an NS (DNP core nursing) course. A second grade of “B-” in an NS course in any semester will result in dismissal from the program.
  • A student who earns a grade below a “B” in any NSAN (anesthesia course) will be dismissed by the program.

Special Student Status

Special student status may be granted to individuals who have been offered deferred admission but wish to begin taking courses earlier than the formal admission date, or applicants who are not seeking a degree or certification from the Egan School of Nursing. Individuals wishing to enroll as special-status student must submit a completed application form with the accompanying fee.  Individuals must provide a transcript verifying that they have earned a baccalaureate (or higher) degree, with a quality point average of 3.0 or higher. Individuals planning to enroll in one of the Fairfield University's graduate programs in the fall are strongly encouraged to meet with the Track Coordinator of the program to which they are applying in order to discuss taking a course(s) prior to formal admission.

Any Incomplete grades must be resolved before admission applications can be processed. Individuals enrolled as a special-status students may take up to two courses from the approved list, cannot be registered on a full time basis, and are not eligible for any tuition aid or financial support from Fairfield University. Upon admission to the graduate program, credits earned as a special-status student will be applied toward the degree, provided the courses are approved by the Track Coordinator and the grade received in each course is a B or better. Successful completion of the course work does not guarantee formal admission. Course availability is prioritized to matriculated students and as such, special status students may only register in the 7 day period prior to the class start date.

 A student who, after having been admitted to an Egan School of Nursing graduate program, chooses to take a graduate course as a non-matriculated student and subsequently receives a grade lower than a B in that course may be dismissed from the Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies.

Appeals

Students who wish to seek a waiver from scholastic standards or academic regulations must submit a written appeal to the Dean and the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies Faculty. Formal appeal procedures are found in the University catalogue.

 

Use of Student Work for Assessment Purposes

As part of course requirements, students in the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies will be asked to produce scholarly papers and projects. The Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies reserves the right to use these documents as sample work for program assessment purposes. Students who do not wish their work to be shared need to inform the professor in writing prior to the last day of class.

 Bridgeport Hospital Nurse Anesthesia Program – Additional Requirements

Students in the Nurse Anesthesia Track are subject to all Bridgeport Hospital and Fairfield University policies and procedures.  Bridgeport Hospital and Bridgeport Anesthesia Associates have the right to remove a student from assignment at Bridgeport Hospital after it has been determined by Bridgeport Hospital that such removal is in the best interest of the Hospital and of patient safety.  The appeal of such removal of a student and all clinical and/or administrative grievances shall be addressed according to the policies and procedures set forth in the Bridgeport Hospital Nurse Anesthesia Program Student Handbook.  Academic Grievances shall be addressed according to the policies and procedures set forth in the Fairfield University School of Nursing Graduate Program Catalog/Handbook.

Academic Honesty

Academic Honesty

Fairfield University's primary purpose is the pursuit of academic excellence. Teaching and learning must occur in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. Such trust and respect can be developed and maintained only if truth and honesty prevail in the academic community. Moreover, it is the shared responsibility of all members of the University community to maintain this climate of honesty. Administrators, faculty, and students all benefit from the pursuit of academic excellence in an environment characterize by integrity, honesty, and mutual respect. Such community integrity is fundamental to, and an inherent part of, Jesuit education.

In keeping with this need for community integrity, students are expected to be honest in their academic work. The University reserves the right to penalize any student whose academic conduct at any time is, in its judgment, detrimental to the University.

Students in the Nurse Anesthesia Track are subject to all Bridgeport Hospital and Fairfield University policies and procedures and to enforce adherence to the same. Bridgeport Hospital and Bridgeport Anesthesia Associates (BAA) have the right to remove a student from assignment at Bridgeport Hospital after it has been determined by Bridgeport Hospital that such removal is in the best interest of the Hospital and patient safety. The appeal of such removal of a student and all clinical and/or administrative grievances shall be addressed according to the policies and procedures set forth in the Bridgeport Hospital Nurse Anesthesia Program Student Handbook. Academic Grievances shall be addressed according to the policies and procedures set forth in the Fairfield University Egan School of Nursing Graduate Program Catalog/Handbook.

Students are sometimes unsure of what constitutes academic honesty. In all academic work, students are expected to submit materials that are their own. Examples of dishonest conduct include but are not limited to:

Cheating, i.e., copying examination answers from materials such as crib notes or another student's paper.

  • Collusion, i.e., working with another person or persons when independent work is prescribed. inappropriate use of notes.
  • Falsification or fabrication of an assigned project, data, results, or sources.
  • Giving, receiving, offering, or soliciting information in examinations.
  • Utilization of previously prepared materials in examinations, tests, or quizzes.
  • Destruction or alteration of the work of another student.
  • The multiple submission of the same paper or report for assignments in more than one course without the prior written permission of each instructor.
  • Plagiarism, the appropriation of information, ideas, or the language of other persons or writers and the submission of them as one's own to satisfy the requirements of a course. Plagiarism thus constitutes both theft and deceit. Assignments (compositions, term papers, computer programs, etc.) acquired either in part or in whole from commercial sources or from other students and submitted as one's own original work will be considered plagiarism.
  • The unauthorized recording, sale, or use of lectures and other instructional materials.

In the event of such dishonesty, professors are to award a grade of zero for the project, paper or examination in question, and may record an "F" for the course itself. When appropriate, expulsion may be recommended. Moreover, a notation of the event is made in the student's file in the Academic Dean's office. Any faculty member encountering an academic offense such as, but not limited to, those listed above will file a written report with his or her Dean, indicating reasons for believing the student has committed an academic offense, and indicating the proposed academic sanction. The student will receive a copy. (If the student is in a school other that of the faculty member, a copy will be sent to the Dean of the student's school.) The student may, within 30 days following receipt of the faculty member's letter, request that the Dean investigate the allegations and meet with the (parties) involved. The Dean will issue a written determination within two weeks of the meeting, with copies to the student(s) and to the professor. If the student requests an appeal to the Academic Vice-President, an Academic Dishonesty Advisor Committee will be convened.

 

Professional Conduct: Graduate Students

It is the Program's policy to encourage the highest standards of conduct within the Hospital, University and the Community. Graduate students, as citizens, are subject to all federal and state laws in addition to all Program regulations governing student conduct and responsibilities. Students in violation of conduct policies may be subject to disciplinary action or dismissal. Violation of academic honesty will result in sanctions imposed under the Program and/or University's disciplinary system. The outcome of this behavior may result in a failing grade, suspension or dismissal from the program.

For students in the Egan School of Nursing, the following policies apply in addition to the more general ones noted above:

  • During tests/examinations, bags, purses, etc., must be placed in an area in the front of the room.
  • Desks must be free from extraneous papers.
  • Student questions during an exam will be dealt with according to the discretion of the proctor.
  • There will be two forms of the test with a face sheet identifying the student, student ID number and form of the test.
  • Students will be seated in every other row when possible.

Health Requirements

The clinical agencies with which the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies affiliates require documentation of various professional and health information for all students who have clinical experiences in the agency. Because of the nature of the nursing practice role, these requirements serve to protect students, faculty, and clients. Therefore, all documentation must be submitted to CastleBranch in order for students to register for classes and attend clinical. Students are responsible for the cost of using the package.

  • FB65 (DNP and MSN Students).
  • You will then be directed to set up your CastleBranch account.
  • Process your payment by submitting Credit Card information.
  • Upon completion, please complete your immunization requirements and send necessary forms and documents to Castlebranch.com by uploading them from your computer. Instructions are posted on your CastleBranch account.

2. All students are responsible for knowing when their own documentation expires, especially if it expires during the academic year. Every student should verify documentation each semester.

 

Physical Examination

All nursing students are required to have a complete physical examination. Annual physical forms should be submitted each academic year. Failure to comply will result in debarment from the clinical area.

The following immunizations/titres are required from all nursing students to remain in compliance with Federal OSHA regulations, Connecticut state law, and local clinical agency requirements. Evidence of disease is not acceptable, regardless of student age. Date of immunization or titre must be provided.

  • Rubeola (measles): You must have documentation of two vaccinations of Rubeola or "Immune" Titer for Rubeola. If your Rubeola Titer is not immune, then you will need to provide the plan of how non-immunity will be addressed.
  • Rubella: You must have documentation of two vaccinations of Rubella or "Immune" Titer for Rubella. If your Rubella Titer is not immune, then you will need to provide the plan of how non-immunity will be addressed.
  • Mumps: You must have documentation of two vaccinations of Mumps or "Immune" Titer for Mumps. If your Mumps Titer is not immune, then you will need to provide the plan of how non-immunity will be addressed.
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox): You must have 2 doses of Varicella Vaccination or "Immune" Titer for Varicella. If your Varicella Titer is not immune, then you will need to provide the plan of how non-immunity will be addressed. ***Date of Disease is NOT Acceptable***
  • Hepatitis B: You must have all three shots of the Hepatitis B Vaccinations or "Immune" Titer for Hepatitis B or Signed Hepatitis B Refusal Form. Please enter Date of Three Shots, or Date of Titer with the result, or Signed Refusal on the form and in the system.
  • PPD: Yearly. You must have a PPD. If PPD is Negative, please enter the PPD Given Date, Read Date, and Negative result on the form and in the system. If a PPD is Positive, you will need a Chest X-Ray with a Negative result to be compliant. After that, you will need an annual letter from your doctor stating you are symptom free.
  • Tetanus/Td Booster: Every 10 years. You must have a Tetanus or TD vaccine within the past 10 years.
  • Flu Vaccination: Required yearly.
  • Physical: Yearly. You must obtain a yearly physical.
  • CPR:  American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider, or American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers.  CPR certification must be current throughout the program.

Students who are hospitalized or students who have had a contagious disease, must submit a written statement from their physician before returning to the nursing program. This statement should include fitness for return and/or specific limitations regarding both class and clinical participation.

Professional Requirements

Background Check and Drug Screening

Because of new requirements in hospital and agency clinical contracts, Fairfield University Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies has chosen CastleBranch as a source for background checks for our students. This is a service that allows students to purchase their own background checks and view the results on their website in a secure setting.

All graduate students will be expected to obtain a background check prior to starting in the graduate program.

The graduate nursing program at Fairfield University requires the successful completion of the clinical component of the curriculum. Most clinical sites require students to complete a criminal background check and drug screening before participating in clinical placements. In addition, national certification agencies may determine that persons with criminal convictions are not eligible to sit for national certification examinations and state laws may restrict/prohibit those with criminal convictions from acquiring a professional license to practice following graduation. Therefore, it is the policy of the Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies that all admitted students must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check and drug screens prior to participating in the clinical component of the curriculum and may be required more than once depending on agency placement. These will be completed at the student’s expense at a location designated by the University. Fairfield University and the Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies have no obligation to refund tuition or otherwise accommodate students in the event that a criminal background check or drug screening renders the student ineligible to complete required courses or clinical placement(s).

Malpractice Insurance

All graduate nursing students are covered by the Fairfield University general liability policy for activities performed in their role as student nurses. This requirement serves to protect the University, the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies, the clinical faculty member, and the individual student.

All DNP students and Masters students in the Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner tracks must carry insurance as both an RN and a nurse practitioner student. Postmaster's DNP students with an APRN license must carry insurance as an advanced practice nurse.

Licensure

All graduate students are required to provide a current Connecticut RN license. For all MSN-DNP Advanced Practice students, a copy of your current APRN license in addition to the Connecticut RN license must be provided.

Clinical Practica for Graduate Students

All students who plan to enroll in practica courses must complete the practicum placement form one semester prior to the semester in which they wish to enroll. Deadlines are Nov. 1 for a following spring enrollment, March 15 for a summer enrollment, and July 15 for a fall enrollment. No contracts will be initiated with affiliating agencies until a complete practicum placement form is received.

Nurse Anesthesia Clinical Practicum

All clinical experiences will be arranged through the Bridgeport Hospital Nurse Anesthesia Program. Students gain hands on experience with a variety of regional (neuraxial and peripheral blocks) and general anesthesia techniques under the close supervision of a supportive CRNA and MD faculty. In addition to the routine surgical cases, our nurse anesthesia students gain experience in trauma, major burn and high-risk obstetrical cases. High-risk pediatric procedures and organ transplants are not performed at Bridgeport Hospital.

The anesthesia services offered are progressive and dynamic. Much effort has been made to provide our patient community with the most current anesthesia practices and services. This department ideal is accomplished by utilizing our ongoing Quality Management System (QMS).

Our QMS identifies patient care and practice issues requiring future education and/or skill development and generates staff, faculty and student participation. This promotes continuous improvement in patient care and a stimulating educational environment.

Occupational Safety And Health Administration (OSHA)

All graduate nursing students are required to successfully complete the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies "OSHA Requirements" (in accordance with OSHA mandate 29CFR 1910.1030), prior to participation in clinical experiences. Completion of the following requirements will deem the student to be "OSHA certified" for one year:

  • Read and study the OSHA self-study guide created by the Connecticut Hospital Association.
  • Obtain a score of 85% or greater on the OSHA examination

Accessing the Connecticut Hospital Association’s OSHA Manual

  1. Copy/paste link into browser or use cursor and double click http://www.chime.org/Career/healthcourse2010/main.html
    Begin the course.  Do not take the exam at the end as the exam is given on Blackboard via the SON CLINICAL PORTAL.
  2. To take the Blackboard OSHA exam
    1. Log into blackboard at https://fairfield.blackboard.com Under My institution tab a blackboard ORGANIZATION named SON CLINICAL PORTAL will be listed on the right side of the screen. Click on the course.  The SON clinical portal will appear. Listed in the grey tab on left side of screen you will see OSHA, click on it.  Open the review folder to assist you before taking the exam
    2. Upon completion of review material take the OSHA exam. You will need to pass with a grade of 34 out of 40.  At the end of the exam click OK and submit, it will prompt you to review material if you’d like to see what you need to review.
    3. After completion of the EXAM you will ALSO need to fill out the Personal Responsibility Form (this is a two item questionnaire).
  3. Retrieving Your OSHA Exam Scores
    1. To retrieve your OSHA Exam scores, click on the "My Grades" link in the Course Menu.  Then click on "OSHA Exam".
    2. Next click on your grade to view your results.
    3. Next take a screenshot of your submission and be sure to include your name in the screenshot (name is excluded in the screenshot below).  Save the screenshot as a file and submit to Castlebranch.

Policy on Accidental Exposure to Blood or Body Fluids

In case of accidental exposure to blood or body fluids, students and faculty members are expected to follow the procedure outlined below. The Fairfield University Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies Incident Report form will be completed.

Accidental Exposure to Blood or Body Fluids

  • Immediately wash exposed area with soap and water, then Betadine Scrub for three minutes. If exposure to mouth or eye, flush the contaminated area with at least one liter of water.
  • After washing, immediately report exposure to Clinical Instructor, who will then report the exposure to the Nurse Manager of the Unit that you were working on when the incident occurred.
  • Follow Clinical Institution protocol for accidental exposure (protocols may vary among Clinical Institutions).
  • Depending on the Clinical Institution: Baseline bloodwork will be drawn on patient and student immediately following the exposure. (Permission must be obtained from both the patient and the student in order for blood to be drawn. The student may have the bloodwork drawn at the Institution where the exposure occurred, or a Physician's Office of his/her choice, but it must be drawn within 24 hours of the exposure).
  • Fill out Clinical Institution's Incident Report. Fill out Fairfield University Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies Incident Report within 24 hours, and report incident to course coordinator as well as to the Office of the Dean.
  • Immediate follow up with a physician is recommended.

Faculty Responsibilities

Verify that the student follows the above steps. Immediately report the incident and the procedure followed to the course coordinator and to the Office of the Dean.

Clinical Policies

Graduate Program

Graduate student attire in the clinical setting should be neat, professional, comfortable, and congruent with the agency's policy. All students should wear a Fairfield University Identification badge.

Identification Tags for Graduate Students

Fairfield University Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies photo identification badges are available in the Stagcard Office in the Barone Campus Center. The cost is $5.00. Replacement badges can be obtained in the StagCard office in the Barone Campus Center.

DNP Immersion Policies

DNP students in the FNP and PMHNP tracks who have exceeded the 200 required clinical practicum hours in any semester may be awarded Immersion credits (in increments of 50 hours) for time in the clinical setting that is focused on the development of clinical skills above and beyond those required for the clinical course objectives. Students would be required to pay for the Immersion credit(s). In order to receive Immersion credit at the end of the semester, students would have to obtain the following approvals before undertaking the additional hours:

  • Approval of the clinical Course Instructor, indicating that the student had met all clinical course objectives and had permission to accrue additional clinical hours for the purpose of developing additional skills.
  • Additional approval of the student’s DNP Advisor and their Track Coordinator.

Students in the Post-Masters DNP program are required to provide verification of their post-baccalaureate practice hours upon admission to the program. Letters of verification from the Master’s-granting University must be submitted on University letterhead. Effective Fall 2017, the Egan School will accept a maximum of 600 post-baccalaureate supervised practice hours from approved Masters’ level coursework. Applications for Post-Masters students with more than 1,000 post-baccalaureate supervised practice hours will be considered on a case by case basis.

 

Student Organizations

The Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies encourages students to become involved in professional, academic, spiritual, social, and athletic activities to enhance their growth throughout their educational experiences. Among the activities available in the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies are the Mu Chi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International and the Fairfield University Graduate Student Assembly. Each of these organizations provides a unique opportunity to nursing students to become involved in professional nursing or graduate student activities.

 

Sigma Theta Tau

Sigma Theta Tau is the only international honor society in nursing. The Mu Chi chapter was established at Fairfield University in 1991 to recognize superior achievement, leadership, high professional standards, creative work, and commitment to the high ideals of the nursing profession among nursing students. Research grants, conferences, publications, films, exhibits, and awards are extended nationally by Sigma Theta Tau. At Fairfield University, membership is an honor conferred on students by invitation, following a committee review of qualifications.

Graduate candidates must:

  • have completed one-fourth of the nursing curriculum by the end of the Spring semester;
  • have achieved an overall grade point average of at least 3.5 at the end of the Spring semester.

Students who meet these academic qualifications should apply when they have completed the above requirements. The counselors of the Mu Chi Chapter, faculty members of the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies, will provide candidates with additional information and an application.

Graduate Student Assembly

All graduate students are part of the Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) which meets twice per semester to help enhance the quality of the graduate student experience by sharing ideas, concerns, and volunteering to help with events.

Facilities

Learning Resource Center (LRC)

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) in the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies provides materials that will augment and enrich student learning. The LRC is located in the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies building. The LRC is staffed by a full time Director as well as supportive student assistants. Hours of operation, include evenings and weekends, are determined each semester and posted in the Egan School of Nursing & Health Studies.

The LRC includes rooms that can be used interchangeably as laboratory or classroom space with furniture and equipment that is mobile and easily rearranged to meet the needs of different courses. In addition, some rooms house specific equipment or simulators used to teach health assessment and specialized skills, such as Intensive Care, Anesthesia, Obstetrics, Neonatal Intensive Care, Pediatrics, and Home Care. Three interconnected rooms provide a fully stocked intensive care unit (ICU); a control room from which to operate the Human Patient Simulators in either of the two adjoining rooms; and an operating room with anesthesia, oxygen, and other equipment necessary within that setting. Media upgrades connect these rooms to two near-by larger classrooms where students can view the actions of small groups participating in a scenario in either the ICU or the Operating Room.

 

Health Promotion Center (HPC)

The Health Promotion Center (HPC) provides faculty and students with an oportunity to clinically practice within our neighboring communities in the Greater Bridgeport area. Through the HPC and the development of strategic partnerships, students and faculty provide preventive and chronic care services with community organizations and agencies that share a common goal of improving the health of people and the community in which they live. Health promotion activities include education, screening, referral, and follow-up services for cardiovascular and diabetes risk reduction, violence prevention, parenting issues, and spiritual/emotional wellness. By providing preventive and chronic care services in community settings, access to care improves and we are better able to tailor health education to the concerns of individuals and groups.

The HPC has been operating in Bridgeport since 1994.   Each year, the HPC staff and faculty work with hundreds of individuals and families in the Greater Bridgeport area. The HPC is a visible extension of the mission of Fairfield University and the Egan School of Nursing.   It serves as a clinical practice/service learning opportunity for nursing students and interprofession collaboration with our community partners.

Funding for the HPC comes through grants, subcontracts, contracts, and donations. Faculty research at the HPC also provides opportunities for students to become involved as research assistants.
