Community Collaborative
The School of Education and Human Development values community relationships that are consistent with its mission and contribute to community engagement, student learning, and faculty development. Opportunities include collaborations with local schools and community agencies that house student fieldwork and internship placements, service-learning projects, and applied research programs.
Through the formation of partnerships we work to deepen our relationship with individual schools and agencies in ways that are mutually beneficial, sustainable, and that facilitate transformational growth for all involved. Through these relationships we strive to provide a structure for professional dialogue, sharing of ideas, and development of new initiatives across organizations.
To learn more about how community schools and mental health organizations can partner with our school through service learning, internships, and volunteering, please contact sehdcommunication@fairfield.edu.
The Connecticut Writing Project
The Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield University, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, is dedicated to improving students' writing abilities by strengthening the teaching and learning of writing, providing professional development programs for classroom teachers, and expanding the professional roles of teachers.
Using the model of teachers teaching teachers, CWP/Fairfield has trained more than 250 teachers, kindergarten through college. In addition, CWP/Fairfield offers a rich assortment of programs including nationally-recognized speakers on reading, writing, and learning issues, Institutes for Urban Teachers, Young Writers Institutes, and Writers Retreats.
CWP/Fairfield was designated a Center for Excellence by the Connecticut State Legislature in 1986 and shares with other Writing Project sites the Carnegie Corporation of New York's evaluation as the "best large-scale effort to improve composition instruction now in operation in this country."
