GSEAP Opens new Counselor Education Lab and Training Center
Historically, the Counselor Education department instructed classes in multiple buildings across campus and lacked a central hub for training and collaboration. The department recognized the need for a common meeting ground and a sophisticated training facility where students could participate in and observe putting teaching into practice.
To answer this need the GSEAP department opened the new Counselor Education Lab and Training Center, located in Dolan West at Fairfield University. This new state of the art training facility has six rooms equipped with Apple TVs, cameras and Apple iPad technology that allows faculty to properly assess, compare progress and provide feedback to their students during counseling seminars. The training center is a dedicated clinical training and instruction space, which includes an office for the clinical instructor, two seminar classrooms, and an observation room with a two-way mirror. Classes for counseling skills, practicum, and internship are all held in this new space.
“This new training facility is a cozy, welcoming environment decked out in shades of warmth, harmonious wall art and inspiring counseling related quote, and equipped with the latest technology to foster collaborative learning” explained Pam Anderson, adjunct professor and clinical coordinator of Counselor Education. Anderson expressed how this new atmosphere has affected her students: “This is a home for them. They walk in and are drawn to the living room and use the space to get to know each other, to network, catch up with their friends on what they’re working on and to collaborate; we’re becoming a community.”
The Counselor Education Lab and Training Center serves as a training facility for graduate students interested in growing professionally in the field of counseling and therapy. “The Counselor Education community is thrilled with the new training center,” explained Diana Hulse, professor and chair of Counselor Education. “We are grateful to all those who helped make this facility a reality, especially Dr. Tracey Robert, our Director of Clinical Training who worked tirelessly to advocate for this space. I am confident that the training center will offer our counseling students the best quality clinical training, now and in the years to come."
