Coach's Letter

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I hope your summer has been enjoyable and you've had some time to relax with your family.

September signifies the start of the school year and the beginning of a new chapter for Fairfield lacrosse. For a number of reasons, I'm excited to get going and about what lies ahead.

After any season, we always reflect upon everything that transpired and what we need to fix in order to continue and improve. We are making some adjustments to how we manage the fall semester. At the core, we will be making a concerted effort to get back to our roots philosophically — tough love, accountability, selflessness, passion, and fun.

Our returning players and newcomers are "made of the right stuff." Our senior class seems extra motivated to provide our team with the strong leadership and direction necessary. As always, the quality of each student-athlete and family associated with this program will be first class.

As I give you an honest snapshot of our program currently, I can tell you that Fairfield lacrosse is very relevant nationally. For the third time in the last eight seasons, we have beaten a team which has advanced to the Final Four that given year. In order to remain relevant, we must stay current in how we operate. I firmly believe that this will be the biggest challenge for all Division I lacrosse programs moving forward.

We all love Fairfield University for a variety of different reasons. Fairfield does what it can financially for all of its athletic teams; however, we live in a world where money is finite. The cost of running a successful D-I program continues to skyrocket, and our budget only covers a percentage of the total cost. Our fundraising goal for this year is 150 donors and $150,000. As you know, I hate asking for money, but the reality is we need to bridge this gap so we can continue to compete at the highest level.

There is only one date to put on the calendar this fall and that is Saturday, October 21st.  There will be a lot of action on campus that weekend as it is reunion weekend and President Nemec's inauguration, but it would be nice to have a healthy number of lacrosse folks who returned to show support.

As we firm up the details for October 21st, I’ll pass them along. It will be a full day as our current team will compete, our alumni game will take place, and we will have a mentor “meet and greet” and cocktail reception to honor last year’s seniors. Final details are still being sorted out, so stay tuned. I hope to see many of you that weekend.

Thank you for your continued support and passion for our program and school.

Best,

Andy Copelan
