Due Dec. 31'I Have a Dream' Speech Contest
On August 28, 1963, an African-American pastor from Atlanta, GA made history by delivering a speech telling the nation about a famous dream he had to bring people of all colors together hand in hand. His words empowered people and paved the way for the youth to follow in his footsteps to work towards peace and justice for all. Every year, our University honors the work and achievements of this historical figure, and we the students have an opportunity to be involved.
Fairfield University’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Observance Committee is proud to present the “I Have a Dream” speech contest. Contestants are asked to submit an original speech, no more than 600 words in 12 point type size, describing:
- How can I, as a college student, use Martin Luther King, Jr.’s ideas about activism and justice to promote positive change within my community? And what have I done already to promote positive change?
One winner will receive a $50 dinner certificate and will have the privilege of reading their speech at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation at the Quick Center on Thursday, January 21, 2010.
Martin Luther King, Jr. is remembered as a man who changed this country using only his faith in God and the power of his words. Now, it is your turn to see that his message is not forgotten and that his dream lives on for years to come.
Please e-mail your speech to diversity@fairfield.edu by December 31, 2009. For more information, please contact Chrystie Cruz, Assistant Director, Institutional Diversity Initiatives at ext. 2342 or ccruz@fairfield.edu.
