Student Clubs and Organizations

 

Student Organization Board of Governors (SOBOG) is a student-run organization responsible for building community through the collaboration between Fairfield's varied student organizations. SOBOG achieves this goal through allocating funds for student organization events and activities, social gatherings for club leaders to network and collaborate, and educational initiatives focused on helping student organizations to best serve the Fairfield University community. SOBOG meets Sunday nights at 6:00 p.m. in the SOBOG conference room in the lower level of the BCC and hosts a General Assembly once a month for all Club Presidents and SOBOG Representatives.

The Student Organization Board of Governors classifies student organizations in one of four categories: Academic Interest, Advocacy & Community Service, Cultural Interest, and Social & Recreational.


The following is a list of currently recognized student organizations
(Please note: Not all recognized student organizations have registered for the current academic year)

 

Academic Interest

Accounting Club - The accounting club primarily introduces freshmen and sophomores to careers in accounting through speakers from accounting firms and financial institutions.

Advertising Club

Alpha Epsilon Delta (Pre-Med Honor Society) - The National Premedical Honor Society encourages and recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement among pre-professional health students.

Alpha Mu Gamma (Foreign Language Honor Society) - Alpha Mu Gamma is a language National Honor Society. The club participates in frequent fundraising activities, like selling Halloween candy grams, and holds events and speakers relating to different cultures and languages.

Alpha Sigma Nu (Jesuit Honor Society) - An academic Jesuit Honor Society committed to the Jesuit Ideal of service.

Beta Alpha Psi (Accounting Honor Society) - Beta ALpha Psi is an honorary academic organization for buisness information professionals that recognizes academic excellence and complements members' formal education by providing interaction among students, faculty, and professionals, and fosters lifelong growth, service, and ethical conduct.

Biology Society - Biology Society is a club for majors whose goals are to unite students by holding meetings where important issues related to Biology are discussed. Events include a post-graduate info session and a career fair for students who are considering a career in research or other biology-related fields. We also hold fundraisers and donate the proceeds to a medical clinic in Africa.

Chemical Society

Communication Club (comm-unity) - The Campus Communication Club represents the communication major and aims to network and involve students in communication. Events include an internship panel as well as day trips into the city to visit internship sites and TRL.

Economics Club - The Fairfield University Economics Club plans events to promote the study of economics outside of class. Events include dinner with professors, alumni panels, speakers, trips, economics' jeopardy and more. The club is open to all students.

Engineering Student Society (ESS) - The Engineering Student Society seeks to promote the engineering world to all students at Fairfield University who have an interest in the field. Some of our past events include guest lecturers speaking about their personal engineering job experiences. There is an annual trip to CTDI in Philadelphia, and meetings regarding internships and the transition from student to professional engineer following graduation. Club members will find themselves attending monthly meetings with fellow engineering students and faculty and gaining insight into engineering they won't receive in the classroom.

Fairfield University Student Psychology Association - To promote curiosity and discussion of psychological issues.

Finance Club - Finance Club analyzes the workings of financial markets and the financial intermediaries involved. Students attend presentations from companies such as GE and Morgan Stanley to learn about future career options. Social events consist of the Meet your Professor Christmas Party at the Levee. All majors are welcome!

History Club

Fairfield Investment Group - The Fairfield Investment Group (FIG) is a student managed investment fund thanks in part to a generous investment from a private investor of $100,000. This organization is unique in that all managerial and investment decisions are made solely by students. The group's goal is to provide return for its investors while simulating real world experiences for Fairfield University students. The group is open to all dedicated students who have taken or are currently taking Finance 101.

Management Club - The Management Club seeks to help students gain more of an insight into the world of Human Resource Management. We help students work on resume building and interviewing skills and expose students to professionals in the field.

Marketing Club - The Marketing Club holds meetings monthly, which consist of a professional from the marketing industry talking to the members about a particular topic. The goals of the club are to allow members to learn about the various industries of marketing while being able to network with the speakers who come in.

Model United Nations - Model UN's purpose is to research and discuss issues of international concern in order to attend conferences and compete against other universities.

Omicron Delta Kappa (Leadership Honor Society) - This honor society exists to recognize qualified upperclassmen who exhibit outstanding leadership qualities in five different phases of campus life.

Philosophy Academy - The Fairfield University Philosophy Academy stands as a club which may act as an intellectual meeting ground for multiple interpretations of works of literature, multiple perceptions of moments in time, and multiple belief structures. Using literature, current news events, movies, and theories, the club acts as a place where one can engage in intellectual debate and learning. The club meets two to three times a month and has gained the support of multiple professors. One professor, Dr. Steve Bayne, remains the main advisor, yet multiple others work with the club.

Physics Club

Pi Mu Epsilon (Math Honor Society) - Pi Mu Epsilon is a chapter of the National Math Honor Society. Members work on events that promote mathematics in the world today. Members are asked to apply based on their Math GPA.

Pi Sigma Alpha (Politics Science Honors) - Pi Sigma Alpha is Fairfield's chapter of the Political Science National Honor Society. We aim to properly recognize the exceptional achievement of students within the Political Science discipline.

Pre Law Club - The Pre-Law Club is geared towards students who are interested in a career in law. The club will go a step beyond traditional faculty advising with regards to law school admissions and focus on using its resources to provide students with more information about LSAT exams, set students up with internships, and foster student - alumni networking.

Psi Chi (Psychology Honor Society) - Psi Chi is Fairfield's Psychology Honor Society and is open to psychology majors who meet certain requirements. In the past, Psi Chi has held "Welcome Sessions" for new psychology majors, raised money for charities that support literacy and mental health, and sponsored information sessions related to psychology.

Psychology Club - The Psychology Club is an organization of students interested in psychology. We have fundraisers, such as our t-shirt sale, and we donate the proceeds to organizations such as Head Start. We also get involved with mental health facilities in the area and we have career nights featuring speakers who work in some field of psychology.

Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society) - Sigma Tau Delta is the English Honor Society. Membership is for senior English Majors and is by invitation. We promote literature and literacy based events on campus, including our Silent Auction and poetry readings.

Society of Women Engineers - SWE (Society of Women Engineers) strives to encourage, advance, and support women in the technological and science fields. SWE is a national organization compromised of professional and student sections. The society is open to men and women of various disciplines (not limited to engineering). Through local and national conferences, community events, and a support system, SWE hopes to continue to encourage women to develop in engineering.

Student Nurses Association - The Student Nurses Association is a community service and volunteer group. Our goals are to help out with various community events and fundraisers, raise health awareness, and establish a community of nurses on campus. Past events include the Heart Walk, singing at nursing homes, health fairs, and panels geared toward answering students' questions about the nursing major.

 

Advocacy & Community Service

Campus Ministry (Arrupe Volunteers, Eucharistic Ministers, Hunger Clean-Up, Lecors, Retreats (Kairos/Freshman) )

Circle K - Circle K involves students who are responsible citizens and leaders with a life long commitment to community service worldwide.

College Democrats - The College Democrats Club seeks to engage the Fairfield student body in political and governmental affairs. The club serves as a forum for members to share common interests in politics and focus on the ideas of the Democratic Party. These ideas are used as building blocks to strengthen the group and the larger Fairfield community.

College Republicans - College Republicans is a part of a national network of Republican clubs on college campuses. We are a group that shares a common political philosophy and core principles. We go out into the community to help Republican candidates, attend some great political speakers, and most importantly, we meet new people and make some great friends.

Colleges Against Cancer - Colleges Against Cancer strives to raise awareness, fundraise, and be an advocacy group for the American Cancer Society on campus. We've had our own celebration on the hill, 5k run, and we plan on having a sports tournament as well as a relay for life to raise money.

Commuter Club - The Commuter Club is an organization geared at making those student who commute feel more at home through a furnished area in the campus center.

Debate Team - The Fairfield University Debate Team provides students an opportunity to engage in stimulating rounds of debate covering a wide variety of topics. Members compete at other universities, such as Harvard and Princeton, and are offered the chance to debate on the international level as well. Students from all disciplines and backgrounds gain confidence, valuable public speaking skills, and an awareness about both domestic and international issues through this activity and utilize these skills in their post-graduate careers.

EMS Rescue Team - The EMS Rescue Team is an all volunteer, student run organization that seeks to provide its members with an opportunity to nurture their leadership and interpersonal skills. The team responds to medical calls on campus, provides non-emergency transportation to and from local hospitals, and provides emergency medical services at campus events. The EMS Rescue Team works with the Department of Public Safety and Student Health Center to ensure the safety and well being of all students, faculty, staff and visitors of Fairfield University. Face AIDS - FACE AIDS is a student campaign to mobilize and inspire students to fight AIDS in Africa. FACE AIDS raises money by selling beaded AIDS awareness pins for $5 made by Zambians affected by HIV/AIDS. All of the money will be donated to Partners in Health, a non-profit organization founded by the MacArthur grant winner Dr. Paul Farmer.

Fairfield University Student Association (FUSA)

Inter Residence Hall Assembly (IRHA) - IRHA is designed to improve all aspects of Residence Hall life and enhance the enjoyment of students living in Residence Halls. IRHA unites all the Residence Halls on campus and governs the RHGs.

The Mirror - The Mirror is an independent student newspaper that publishes issues weekly during the semester, as well as a more frequently updated online edition.

P.A.W.S. (Pet and Animal Welfare Society) - PAWS CLUB (Pet and Animals Welfare Society) is an organization for animal lovers interested in raising awareness both on and off campus about animal welfare. In the past we have done several fundraisers and the money raised was donated to organizations such as the ASPCA and local shelters. Another big part of our club is volunteering. Most of our members are active shelter volunteers. The main thing all of the members have in common is a passion for animals.

Peace OUTside Campus - The Fairfield Chapter, is dedicated to promoting peaceful and safe living environments in college communities nationwide. Our goal is to empower students and their families to be more proactive in safeguarding themselves against those who perpetuate crime and violence. Rather than creating a culture of fear, we strive to reinforce a sense of empowerment, strength, and security.

Peer Education - Peer Education provides an education in peer health with programs such as Smoking Awareness, Alcohol Awareness, Sexual Assault, and Safe Spring Breaks.

Red Cross Chapter of Fairfield University - The Red Cross Club works to further and support the mission of the American Red Cross by providing Red Cross services to the local community and students at Fairfield University. Our major events are bi-annual blood drives as well as an annual Rockin' for Relief Dance-a-thon in support of disaster victims. Students organize and plan these events as well as others during our monthly meetings.

Student Environmental Association - Student Environmental Association seeks to increase campus awareness about environmental issues. We are in the process of sorting out the recycling program on campus. We also organize events for Earthweek and organize Cans for Candy, which is a recycling drive on campus during Halloween Weekend. Tour Guide Program - The Tour Guides serve an integral role in the reputation of Fairfield University. These students volunteers present the campus to prospective students. Tour guides emphasize Fairfield's beautiful surroundings, friendly student body, and opportunities that Fairfield has to offer.

Young Life - It's more than shaving cream and cheese puffs, silly skits, songs and trips to camp. In college, Young Life can be a time for you to build lasting friendships, develop your leadership abilities and grow in a relationship with God. Young Life is a non-denominational, Christian outreach that offers unique opportunities for friendship and reaching out to local junior high and high school students.

 

Cultural Interest

Alliance - Alliance is a group for GLBT students and straight allies, which exists to promote diversity and acceptance on campus. We hold weekly meetings and a number of events and activities throughout the year. We also act as an advocacy group on campus for GLBT students and issues. Anime Club - Anime club provides a means for students who share a common interest in anime and manga through anime showings, various trips to conventions, and access to aspecial library of anime and manga.

Asian Student Association - The Asian Student Association seeks to spread the awareness of Asian culture on campus. Through various cultural activities and events, such as a Japanese Fall Festival and Chinese New Years, we hope to broaden the diversity of the university. Members of ASA participate in activities such as organizing and setting up for these events, visiting Chinatown in New York City, watching Asian films, and cooking traditional food, among other things. Members discuss issues of young Asian and Asian Americans who seek to better understand their cultural identities.

Capoiera - Capoiera seeks to promote the Afro Brazilian culture on the Fairfield University Campus. It will also promote the exchange student process with our Brazilian counterpart.

German Club - German Club's goal is to speak German and learn and experience German, Swiss, and Austrian culture on and off campus.

Greek Club - This club is for Greek and non Greek students alike to meet and learn more about Greek culture. The Greek club holds such events as the annual "Greek Dinner" which is open to all students on campus.

Italian Club - The Italian club will share the "Italian experience" with Fairfield students, regardless of ancestry, who are interested in Italian culture.

International Student Club

Irish Cultural Society - The goal of the Irish Cultural Society is to bring awareness of the Irish culture, like music and food, to campus. Our event this year was the Irish band MacTalla Mor, who played an amazing performance at the Levee. As a new and upcoming club, all ideas are welcomed.

Kadima - The purpose of Kadima is to make visible Jews and Jewish life on campus, provide support for undergraduate Jewish students, and also promote awareness of Jewish culture around campus.

Cercle Français is the French club here at Fairfield University. We are open to anyone who may fluently speak the language, is currently or has taken classes in French, or is simply just interested in learning more about the French culture. We are a new club this year and plan to collaborate with other language clubs, take a trip to New York City to see one of several French plays, and hold a French culture night with ethnic food, games and movies. Our goal is to immerse our members in the French culture so we encourage all who may be interested to join our club and share ideas and good times!

Spanish American Latino Student Association (SALSA) - The purpose of SALSA is to unite Latinos of all backgrounds, but at the same time infusing Spanish heritage into the Fairfield community.

TEAM (Together Effectively Achieving Multiculturalism) - The purpose of TEAM is to achieve multiculturalism among students, sponsoring trips appropriate to its mission and sponsoring discussions regarding multicultural issues.

Umoja (African American and Caribbean Student Association) - Umoja's purpose is to create, stimulate, and maintain cultural activities on campus, focusing on the African American and Caribbean cultures. Umoja also maintains a commitment to the political and social welfare of its members by sponsoring numerous social events, which promote multiculturalism both on campus and in the community.

 

Social & Recreational

Art Club - The Fairfield University Art Club is designed for students who are interested in art and its role in the greater community to get together and work on artistic projects, installations, and community service activities. This is a very casual club where students can bring projects they want to work on to open studio days and also participate in volunteer after school programs and relief fundraisers.

Ballroom Dance Club - Ballroom Dance is a social club where professional instructors teach lessons on various Ballroom Dances, such as ChaCha, Swing, Waltz, and Tango. The club is a great study break and a great way to meet new people. New members are always welcomed. Our main fundraising event is the annual Murder Mystery Dance.

Board Game Club - Board Game Club's purpose is to give students a chance to play and enjoy different types of board games.

Break Dancing Club - To provide a meeting ground where break dancers, poppers, lockers, house, and freestyle dancers can gather and share their common love of dancing.

Cheerleading

Dance Ensemble - Dance Ensemble engages in jazz, tap, ballet, modern, lyrical, and hip-hop dancing. At the end of the year a recital is put on in the Quick Center. Classes meet once a week and two dances are taught each class.

Dance Team

Equestrian Club - The Equestrian Team competes individually and as a team in horse shows against other universities.

Fairfield University Band Association - The Band Association offers members a chance to perform and acquire musical skills through instrumental performances and through an understanding of musical styles and theories.

Film Club - The Fairfield University Film Club is compromised of students who enjoy both watching and making films. Our weekly meetings serve as a place to watch movies together as well as a place to throw around ideas and make schedules for upcoming productions.

Glee Club - The Glee Club performs a varied repertoire of early, classical, and contemporary music in numerous engagements with other choruses, and with festival and symphonic Orchestras.

HAM Channel - The Ham Channel is a student run television station that provides the campus with student produced programming as well as monthly movies. The Ham Channel also has sub divisional clubs: On-Air Talent Club and Television Writer's Club.

Ice Hockey Club - The Ice Hockey team is a club sport that represents Fairfield University at local hockey games.

Jazz Ensemble

Martial Arts Club - The Karate Club allows for members of the University Community to enjoy, participate, and compete in Karate.

The Manor - The Manor is Fairfield's yearbook organization.

Men's Club Soccer

Men's Club Volleyball - Men's Volleyball seeks to, and actively engages in, high level club volleyball in the Northeast and across the nation. As a member of the NECVL, we engage in our regional league, with yearly participation in the NIRSA sponsored national competition. We compete against teams from the NCAA, EIVA, and USAV, among others.

Men's Rugby Football Club - To offer the Fairfield University community the opportunity to compete against other schools in Rugby matches.

Pep Band

Sailing Club - The Sailing Team is comprised of both advanced sailors and novices who practice and compete in dinghy regattas all over New England every weekend in the spring and fall. We are an entirely student run organization, which means that members are involved in all aspects of team management, including scheduling regattas and running practices. We own a fleet of six Flying Juniors and hope to expand as the team grows.

Scuba Club - The purpose of Scuba Club is to open the underwater sport of scuba diving to the student body; to teach respect and safety while enjoying the sport.

Ski and Snowboard Team - The purpose of Ski and Snowboard Team is to give students the chance to ski and learn to race as well as improve their skiing ability.

Snow Sports Club - The Snow Sports Club provides students with frequent ski and snowboard trips regardless of their ability.

The Sound - Fairfield's own Literary Magazine, The Sound, publishes essays, fiction, poetry, artwork, photography, and other artistic works.

The Sounds (a capella group) - The Sounds is Fairfield University's only student-run a capella group on campus. We perform one show a semester on campus and travel for other shows by request.

Stags in the Stands - Stags in the Stand's goal is to spread school spirit throughout the campus by providing a spirited cheering section at our athletic events.

Student Alumni Association - The goal of Student Alumni Association is to bring unity amongst students and alumni. Important events that Student Alumni Association organizes or helps with are Dodgeball, Reunion Weekend, Homecoming Weekend, Life 101, and Teddy Bears with Love. You may be a student for four years, but you are an alumni for life!

Student Environmental Association - This club works to promote environmental awareness of current issues through education, programming, and activism.

Surf Club - The Surf Club organizes day trips to Rhode Island, Long Island, and New Jersey for students who enjoy surfing and the outdoors.

Theater Fairfield - This organization provides activities related to and in support of drama and theater.

Track and Field - A sport that is open to all students regardless of how fast he or she is, Track and Field combines teamwork with a sense of self satisfaction and victory.

Women's Club Volleyball - The Women's Club Volleyball team consists of fifteen players who compete in the Northeast Women's Volleyball Collegiate League (NWVCL). The team plays other colleges and universities around the Northeast region including Boston University, UCONN, Cornell, University of Delaware, and Rutgers. Practices are held twice a week

Women's Ice Hockey - Women's Ice Hockey is a place to develop and learn how to play ice hockey. Our team practices twice a week with games from October to February. We work hard and have a lot of fun. Members enjoy the team camaraderie and the competition factor many students lose after high school.

Women's Rugby - Women's Rugby is a club sports team that competes against neighboring teams.

WVOF - WVOF is a non-commercial radio station that broadcasts creative live programming to Fairfield University and Fairfield County via 88.5 FM, and the world via http://www.wvof.org/. WVOF utilizes its studio for teaching and cultivating a communications/media experience for students.

Your Mom Does Improv - Your Mom Does Improv is an organization that aims to spread the awesomeness of improvisation. Student directors teach ensembles the many aspects of improv through weekly rehearsals. Performances are held on a spontaneous basis and everyone is welcome to play. If your mom can do it, so can you!
