Health Promotion Center
The Health Promotion Center (HPC) is a free standing community nursing center based in Bridgeport, CT that is part of the National Nursing Center Consortium. Through the HPC, students, faculty and staff provide health education, screening, referral, and follow-up services to underserved populations by working with community organizations and agencies, as well as with individuals. Services focus primarily on lead poisoning and cardiovascular risk reduction, but include topical areas such as nutrition, environmental health, asthma, exercise, violence prevention, parenting issues, and spiritual/emotional wellness.

Agencies
In the nursing program students participate in nursing practice in a variety of clinical settings. The School has affiliations with over 50 agencies including small and large hospitals, community health centers, in-patient and out-patient psychiatric institutions, and schools. Opportunities are available in urban and suburban settings, servicing both the poor and the affluent, for students to work with people of different cultures, backgrounds and needs.

Students work directly with a primary nurse delivering nursing care in the hospital unit. Students gradually assume more responsibility for post-partum and newborn assessment, interviewing of patients and family and education on self-care, infant care, including health promotion, and treatment guidelines. Students also contribute to charting of care, and complete care plans on mothers, infants, and an observed labor and delivery experience. Post conferences are held each clinical day to discuss care-related issues and to assist students in group problem-solving. Opportunities are available for students to work with pregnant clients in prenatal clinics/doctor's offices, at childbirth classes, and in other community areas affiliated with the institution.

The Public Health Department of the Town of Fairfield provides the school nurses in the public schools system. Students are placed in either an elementary or middle school in the public school system in Fairfield for clinical experiences. Student work one-on-one with the school nurse to gain insight into the delivery of services to a school-aged population through direct service to students, individual and group health education, and clinical projects. Students learn how to work with children presenting with food allergies, disabilities, common health problems such as colds and headaches, and outbreaks of influenza and other problems. The nursing students then meet as a group for post-conferences to discuss shared and unique experiences.
Southwestern CT Mental Health Services

Students who have their clinical placement at the BMHC will work with both with clients experiencing acute and chronic mental health problems. They will rotate through the admissions department, the mobile crises department. There are 3 inpatient units and students will rotate through the three inpatient units which include the substance abuse unit-working with people experience addiction to alcohol and other drugs of abuse and may or may not have another mental health issue and then the acute psychiatric unit and the unit for the more chronic client. The clients at the BMHC have a wide range of problems-including psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders and mood disorders and usually have no insurance. Students will have the opportunity to speak with clients one on one, attend various types of groups, and team meetings.

Greenwich Hospital is a community hospital that has been revitalized in recent years. In addition, the School of Nursing is developing unique and innovative relationships with this hospital that will provide wonderful experiences for students. This site is currently used as a clinical location for senior level courses where preceptors work individually with students in their final semester of study. The location and size of this facility allows students to experience working in a very supportive environment with rich resources. Greenwich Hospital provides cutting edge patient information services with advanced clinical services. The Home Care Department is innovative and provides an excellent site for student to learn the basics of providing services in the patient's home.

Hospital of St. Raphael

Saint Raphael's is a 511-bed, inner city academic health science center affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine. The Hospital was founded in 1907 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, who continue as its sponsors. St. Raphael offers a full range of services, and is designated as a "Top 100 Hospital" for intensive care and stroke care. Because its mission is to provide care to the underserved, students are exposed to a diverse patient population. Junior and senior students work with faculty and the primary nurse to deliver care in medical, surgical, and critical care settings. Students observe diagnostic and operative procedures related to course content and their assigned patients. Students have rich learning opportunities including admitting, teaching, and discharging patients; medication administration; performing sterile and non-sterile procedures; delegating to unlicensed personnel; and using computerized documentation. Post conferences are held each week to discuss care-related issues and to assist students in group problem-solving. Experts in ethics, respiratory and critical care, diabetes, and spirituality have enriched students' learning by presenting at our clinical conferences. Opportunities are available for senior students to work with advanced practice nurses in primary care settings.

Students have a variety of clinical experiences in this institution. Junior and senior level students work with clients in acute care and ambulatory settings. Senior transition students and RN/BSN students individualize their clinical experience according to their professional and learning needs. In the Spring of 2002, a pilot "Shadow a Nurse" program was successfully implemented for the freshman students at Norwalk Hospital. Students shadowed nurses in Pediatrics, Maternity, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, and the New Born Intensive Care Unit.

Silver Hill Hospital is a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient psychiatric hospital offering a wide variety of services. It is located in a beautiful setting in New Canaan Connecticut and is widely regarded by the national as well as international community as an excellent treatment center for psychiatric and substance abuse problems. Students are teamed up with psychiatric nurses who have expertise in this area and are welcomed into groups and psychoeducational classes at all levels of care.

Students do medical, surgical, out-patient and obstetric/gynecology clinic rotations here as juniors and seniors. They also follow patients from admission to the Operating Room and the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. Observational experiences are scheduled for each student in a variety of adult Intensive Care Units. Students work with their instructor and the staff nurse assigned to a patient in delivering total patient care. Senior nursing students during their last semester, Transition to Professional Role course, work on a unit (mutually decided by the student and the course coordinator) of their choice. This course involves eight weeks of two eight-hour shifts working under the supervision of a staff nurse preceptor. Students may also be assigned to shadow a nursing leader at the Hospital of St. Raphael for their Nursing Leadership Mentoring rotation.

Students have a variety of clinical experiences in this acute care hospital setting. At the junior and senior levels of the program, students provide supervised care for adult patients with acute health care problems or acute episodes of chronic problems. They gradually assume increasing responsibility for assessing patients, planning care, administering medication, intervening therapeutically, teaching patients, interacting with families, collaborating with health team members and recording patient's progress. They also spend time in the emergency department, the operating room, ambulatory surgery and various ambulatory clinics.

The West Haven Veterans Hospital psychiatric rotation gives students opportunities in the psychiatric emergency room, in patient acute care psychiatric unit and with homeless veterans. The students have an opportunity to rotate through all three of the psychiatric clinical sites. The West Haven VA provides inpatient and outpatient services for all veterans who have honorable served their nation.

Each nursing student is assigned to Yale New Haven Hospital (YNNH) for their pediatric acute care rotation. Students work on Adolescent, Infant/Toddler, or School-Age units. They also have the option of observing in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Research Unit, and Pediatric Respiratory Care Unit. Students may also do their obstetric/gynecology rotation at Yale New Haven Hospital where students work on post partum, newborn nursery and labor and delivery units. Students also do an observational experience in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Students may also do an inpatient psychiatric rotation at YNHH. Many students also do medical, surgical and out-patient clinic rotations at YNHH. Students work with their instructor and the staff nurse assigned to a patient in delivering total patient care. There are multiple other experiences which students participate in such as Intensive Care, Invasive Cardiology, Adult and Pediatric Emergency Departments, Operating Room, and Post Anesthesia Care Unit. |
