Secondary Insurance Information

Fairfield University carries secondary insurance for all student-athletes who are injured in a University-sponsored event, practice or game. Therefore, all medical bills for any athletic injury must first be submitted through the student-athlete's primary insurance provider. The remaining balances, along with the invoice and insurance provider's Explanation of Benefits (EOB), should be forwarded to the Sports Medicine department for processing.

The University has working relationships with several local physicians in the area. However, there may be times when a student-athlete may choose to see his or her personal physician.  Local physicians recommended by the University have agreed to accept the allowable payments from the University's secondary insurance carrier.  Therefore, all other balances above the customary amounts which are assessed by personal or private physicians are the sole responsibility of the student-athlete and his or her family.

In short, when a student-athlete has an injury that requires the use of local or outside physicians, the following procedure applies:

  • Submit initial bill to student-athlete's primary insurance provider
  • Wait to receive the Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from the primary insurance stating what has been paid
  • Submit the remaining balance, with the EOB, to:
