Parking & Vehicle Registration

Fairfield University is a residential and pedestrian campus. Walking, bicycles, or the campus shuttle are the primary means for getting around the campus. It is approximately a 15-minute walk from one end of the campus to the other. The use of vehicles and parking on campus is provided on a priority level based on logical order: faculty and staff, visitors, graduate and part-time students, commuting students, off-campus students, and resident students (with the exception of freshmen). When necessary, parking for resident students may be restricted or limited since they live on campus and have less need to travel off-campus.

All vehicles must be registered with the Department of Public Safety, display a valid vehicle registration sticker, and be parked in authorized lots only. Members of the University community may not park their cars on neighborhood streets adjacent to the campus. Parking on campus is a privilege, not a right, and the privilege can be revoked for due cause.

The use of designated handicap spaces requires a state-issued permit, and the University does not issue handicap permits. (The campus shuttle buses are handicap-accessible.)

Full-time, undergraduate freshmen (with the exception of commuting students) cannot register or have vehicles on campus. Temporary exceptions to this policy may be granted by the Special Accommodations Evaluation Committee. The Committee is composed of professionals from the Office of Academic and Disability Support Services, the Health Center, Counseling & Psychological Services and Residence Life. Information submitted for the committee's determination will be protected as a confidential file in Office of Academic and Disability Support Services. Requests for special privileges will be considered only for the following reasons:

  • Student has a qualifying physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities and has a record of such impairment or is regarded as having such impairment.
  • Students seeking access to a vehicle and parking for medical reasons such as mobility limitation.

Please complete the request form and send it to:

If an exception is granted, it will only be for the time period necessary to address the immediate need and will not be extended for convenience. In all cases, the proximity and/or driving distance from the family home to campus will be considered. All other requests for exceptions (e.g. off-campus employment, participation in a student activity, personal appointments off-campus, traveling to or from home, last-minute requests, etc.) will not be considered. If such a situation exists, the student must make other transportation arrangements. As a residential campus, Fairfield simply does not have the ability to accommodate freshmen with vehicles. Violations of this policy will be documented and referred for disciplinary action, in addition to any ticket or towing charges assessed to the offender.

Traffic or parking tickets may be appealed through the Department of Public Safety.

More information regarding parking regulation is outlined in the Department of Public Safety's parking and traffic brochure.
