Phone Service

 

Each residence hall room, townhouse, and apartment has a telephone line and is assigned a campus extension. Residents need only supply a standard telephone to use the service.

Voicemail:

While students will share a phone number with their roommate(s), each student has an individual voice-mailbox. Therefore, students do not need, nor should they bring, answering machines. For example, in a typical residence hall room, a caller would receive the greeting, "You have reached John and Paul's room, and we are unable to take your call. To leave a message for John, press 1, and for Paul, press 2."

In addition to receiving messages, the campus voicemail system allows the University to broadcast a general message to all campus extensions. This is particularly useful when a computer network outage might occur or for some other timely announcement or emergency.

Long-Distance Service:

Fairfield no longer provides or contracts with a third-party vendor to provide long-distance service from student telephones. While students can make calls on campus and local calls off-campus, as well as receive calls from anywhere, they must use pre-paid or other calling cards for long-distance calls from their rooms, townhouses, or apartments. This allows students greater flexibility in finding the best available long-distance rates and also allows them to make their calls from any standard phone.

Cellular/Mobile Phone Service:

Fairfield does not provide or contract with a third-party vendor to provide cellular/mobile phone service for students. There are Verizon, Nextel, and T-Mobile towers on campus, and reception on campus is generally good. Most residence halls and some academic/administrative buildings have concrete block walls, so there may be some reception interruptions in those buildings in particular.
