Information for Off-Campus Student Residents for Academic Year 2007-2008

August 2007

Dear Off-Campus Student Residents, Parents and Guardians:

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the summer months. I am writing to share information that relates to students who are residing off campus during the upcoming academic year. In the past, my office has sent separate letters to students and parents/guardians, but I believe the information below is of value and relevance to all. By sharing it with you in one letter, I hope it informs as well as promotes discussion and questions that can assist in making your upcoming year enjoyable, safe and productive.

Mandatory Student Meeting: All off-campus student residents are required to attend an informational meeting on Sunday, September 9, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. Please be sure to bring your StagCard to record your attendance. The Rev. Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., will be in attendance as will other campus and town representatives to answer questions and offer relevant information.

SBRA: The Student Beach Resident Association (SBRA) is in place to represent the interests and concerns of Fairfield University students living at the beach and is also charged with programming for the student beach community. I want to build upon SBRA's good work from last year and am pleased at the energy and initiative already demonstrated by SBRA's President, Erin Hickey, and her leadership team. I encourage all off-campus residents to get involved in SBRA as the success of that organization plays an important role in the quality of life at the beach. If you would like to become involved in SBRA, please contact Ms. Allison Berger by calling (203) 254-4211 or aberger@mail.fairfield.edu.

Living Off Campus/Conduct: As private residents and as Fairfield University students, you should adopt for yourself a way of living that is reflective of your school's commitment to developing responsible citizens and leaders. Two resources are critical to a practical understanding of acceptable versus unacceptable conduct:

  • The Student Handbook (which will be in your campus mailboxes and online) sets forth our code of conduct which applies equally to those living on and off campus.
  • The Fairfield Police Department sets forth its policy and protocols in a letter which can be accessed by going to www.fairfield.edu/sl_selectedcomm.html and clicking on the document entitled "Letter to Beach Residents from Fairfield's Chief of Police" (May 2007).

All off-campus student residents are expected to understand and comply with the provisions set forth in these two resources.

Staying Informed: Information for all students, including off-campus students, will continue to be sent via StagWeb or posted on the Fairfield.edu website. It remains your responsibility to check your StagWeb account and campus mailbox frequently.

Staying Engaged: In addition to staying informed, I encourage all off-campus student residents to stay involved and engaged with events and activities on campus. Off-campus residency should not lead to a disassociation from campus life. Maintain your ties with the campus and take advantage of the many benefits that arise out of involvement in the campus community. Undergraduates on campus certainly benefit from the leadership and mentoring roles that upperclassmen play in their lives.

Thank you for taking a moment to review this information and enjoy the rest of the summer. I look forward to seeing you all in the fall and invite you to stop by my office in BCC 408 to say hello.

Sincerely,

Thomas C. Pellegrino, Ph.D.
Associate Vice President and Dean of Students
