Process for Involuntary Withdrawal

Students may be involuntarily withdrawn by the Office of the Dean of Students for disciplinary reasons, or for failure to provide required documentation. Students who fail to meet minimum academic requirements or progress towards a degree may be withdrawn for academic reasons by the appropriate academic dean's office. In addition, students with outstanding financial obligations to the University may be withdrawn by the Office of the University Bursar.

When a student, because of that student's psychological or physical condition, exhibits behavior that constitutes a danger to himself/herself, other persons or property, or when that behavior is disruptive to the normal education process of the University (including activities in University-owned buildings and residences) or renders himself/herself incapable of achieving academic goals, that student may be involuntarily withdrawn from the University by the Office of the Dean of Students, in consultation with professional staff in Counseling Services and/or the Health Center. Typically, students who injure themselves or attempt to take their own lives will be withdrawn for a minimum of one semester. In this context, it should be understood that there are limits to the University's ability to care for students with serious physical or psychological conditions and therefore, the University reserves the right to decide, in certain circumstances, when it cannot provide educational or other services to a particular student. It is the University's intention that the student use the period of his/her withdrawal to dedicate appropriate time and energy towards resolving the condition that resulted in the withdrawal.
