Letter to Off-Campus Residents

August 2006

Dear Off-Campus Resident,

I hope this letter finds you enjoying the summer months. I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you important information as it relates to your residency off campus during the upcoming academic year.

Mandatory Meeting: There will a mandatory meeting for all off-campus residents on Sunday, September 10, 2006 at 7:30 p.m. in the Quick Center for the Arts. Attendance is required and recorded so please make sure to bring your StagCard. Father Jeffrey von Arx will be in attendance at this meeting as well as several other members of the University administration.

Living Off Campus: Living off campus can be an extremely rewarding experience for students. It is a point of pride to note that the vast majority of students living off campus are able to enjoy their time while still following the rules and being valued neighbors. Unfortunately, the inappropriate conduct of a relatively small number of students tends to be portrayed as the behavior of all. That is not fair, nor accurate, but it is a reality. In light of this, it is the collective responsibility of the student community to subscribe to a reasonable lifestyle off campus and condemn behavior that does not. How students act now may impact beach living for future Fairfield students.

Standards of Conduct: The implicit and explicit standards of conduct established by Fairfield University for all students apply both on campus and off campus. The Student Handbook will be in your campus mailboxes before classes begin in September. A complete version is also available in PDF format at www.fairfield.edu/sl_sthandbook.html. All students are required to provide the University with their local addresses and phone numbers. Address information is kept on file solely in the Dean of Students office and is used to contact students to get timely information out or in the event of an emergency. It is a violation of University policy to falsify your contact information in any way. Students found to have misrepresented information will be subject to the student conduct process. Sanctions could include being required to move back to campus. Please take note of this, as the financial implications of such a sanction could prove significant. Finally, the injunction issued by the Bridgeport Superior Court in 2000 is permanent. Large gatherings in the common areas of Lantern Point are prohibited. Violation of this injunction could result in those responsible being held in contempt of a court order, and/or other fines or charges.

Information: Information for all students, including off-campus students, will be sent primarily via Stag Web or posted on the Fairfield.edu website. Paper communications will be infrequent. It is your responsibility to check your Stag Web account and campus mailbox frequently. Failure to do so will not be an excuse for missing a notice or requirement.

SBRA: The Student Beach Resident Association (SBRA) is in place to represent the interests and concerns of off-campus student borders and has a budget that comes directly from student fees. If you are interested in becoming involved in SBRA, please contact Mr. Duane Melzer, Coordinator of Off-Campus Students, at ext. 2747 or e-mail dmelzer@mail.fairfield.edu.

Thank you for taking the time to review this, and enjoy the remainder of the summer.

Sincerely,

Thomas C. Pellegrino, Ph.D.
Dean of Students
