In an effort to honor the diversity of the Fairfield University community, the Office of Student Diversity Programs is proud to sponsor "Diversity Night at Harbor Yard" on Monday, February 18. The Fairfield University student body reflects many of our society's racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Along with our multicultural clubs and organizations, we seek to raise awareness on campus of the rich diversity that is amongst us everyday at Fairfield University. Please join us in celebrating the diverse array of people, talents, and interests that make us Fairfield University.

Harold Ford, Jr. Open Visions Lecture
8 p.m. at the Quick Center
Student tickets: $5

Harold Ford, Jr. served Tennessee in the United States Congress for 10 years. Described by President Bill Clinton as "the walking, living embodiment of where America ought to go in the 21st century," Ford is now Chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council and Vice Chairman of Merrill Lynch. First elected in 1996 at the age of 26, Ford represented the Memphis-based ninth district of Tennessee for 10 years.

Hip-Hop & the 2008 Presidential Election
8 p.m. in BCC Lower Level

Town hall meeting led by leading hip-hop activists, scholars and artists. The following will be discussed:

  • voter registration and voter education - what's at stake for youth?
  • what are the political issues that matter to the hip-hop generation?
  • why the hip-hop vote counts and to whom?
  • how can local hip-hop organizers influence the outcome of the 2008 presidential election?
  • what can student activists do to mobilize the hip-hop vote?
  • understanding the issues, candidates, the role of the Federal Elections Commission and more.

Jean Robert Cadet lecture
8 p.m. at the Quick Center

Jean Robert Cadet was raised in Haiti as a child slave, and was moved to the United States as a teenager (to continue slaving in this country). He eventually obtained his freedom and founded a non-profit foundation that fights childhood slavery in Haiti and elsewhere (http://www.restavecfreedom.org).

Diversity Week
A week-long series of events put on by IRHA, ASA, Alliance, SALSA, and Umoja.

Tentative schedule:

Monday: Comedian
Tuesday: Early afternoon - Poetry reading with Otoniel Guevara of El Salvador. Night - "Fairfield Iron Chef" competition with ASA, SALSA, and international clubs.
Wednesday: Event sponsored by Alliance
Thursday: Event sponsored by Umoja
Friday: Cultural fair, BCC lower level - student orgs, craft artists, and town representatives will have booths highlighting their culture and food will be available

Wednesday, April 9

Herman Boone Lecture sponsored by FUSA
8 p.m. at the Quick Center

In the movie Remember the Titans actor Denzel Washington portrayed Herman Boone. It is because of Boone's leadership that the world will always remember the Titans of Alexandria. Boone was able to pull together and solidify a diverse staff and an unfocused group of young men into the most powerful football team in Virginia. The willingness of the teammates to talk to each other, along with their determination to win, brought together a city torn apart by prejudice and hatred.
