Mark Aloisi holds a B.A. in History & Contemporary Mediterranean Studies (University of Malta, 1995) and an M.Phil in Medieval Italian History (Thesis Title: "Conquest and Trade in the Medieval Mediterranean: Pisa and Sardinia, 13th-15th centuries.") from the University of Cambridge. He is currently completing his PhD (submission date: December, 2006) from the University of Minnesota on "Economy and society in late Medieval Sicily: Sciacca and its hinterland during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries." His research interests include the political, social, and economic history of the Medieval and Early Modern Mediterranean (especially Sicily, southern Italy, Malta and North Africa) and has published and lectured on topics including agrarian history, Mediterranean peasants, piracy and corsairing, agriculture and trade in Late Medieval/Early Modern Sicily and Jewish-Christian-Muslim relations in Medieval Sicily and southern Italy.

Laura Aureli holds a Diploma in Photography from Stevenson College (Edinburgh, Scotland) and a BA in Photography, Film, and Television from (Edinburgh, Scotland). Laura has pursued an active professional career in photography in the UK and in Italy: with exhibitions in Edinburgh at the Institute of Italian Culture (1997, 2000); the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (1995); the KJP Gallery (1997) and the Attic Gallery (1997). She has been given numerous commissions by major newspapers in Scotland, worked for the BBC in Glasgow and has worked on freelance projects in Naples and throughout Sicily.

Boris Behncke took an MSc in Geological Sciences from Christian-Albrechts Universität (Kiel, Germany) and completed his PhD thesis (Università degli Studi Catania, Italy) on the Tectonic, sedimentary and volcanic evolution of the northern margin of the Hyblean Plateau (Sicily) from the Upper Miocene to the Quaternary ("Evoluzione tettonico-sedimentaria e vulcanica del margine settentrionale Ibleo dal Miocene superiore al Quaternario"). His research interests include eruptive and depositional volcanic processes and he has published on the geology of the Hyblean Plateau and recent eruptive activity at Mount Etna.

Julia Brooke holds a BA in English Literature (University of East Anglia, UK) and a Masters of Literature degree from the University of Birmingham. She is a member of the Renaissance Drama Research Group of The Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon-Avon, England, has published in the recent Cambridge Guide to Women's Literature and is currently working on a book on English Renaissance drama.

Scott Burgess holds a BA in Ancient History and an MA Ancient Philosophy (University of Reading, UK). He completed his PhD (2003, University of Wales, UK) in Ancient Philosophy and Medicine on the Composition, Structure and Functioning of the Human Soul and Body in the Timaeus of Plato. Research interests include: Ancient Philosophy (esp. Plato), Ancient Medicine and Political Thought. He has published papers on related topics and is currently working on a book on Plato's Timaeus.

His research interests focus on Italian politics, right-wing parties and race and immigration politics.

Mari Elena Gorrini holds the following qualifications: Laurea in Lettere Classiche (Università di Pavia); Specializzazione in Archeologica (Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene); Dottorato in Archeologia (2004, Istituto Universitario Orientale di Napoli/ Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene). Her PhD research, which she is preparing for publication as a monograph, concerns Greek healing heroes and she lectured and published articles on individual heroes and on wider topics in classical archaeology, the history of religion and art.

Dr. Guarino holds a BSc in Natural Sciences (Università di Pavia), an MSc in Environmental Management and Auditing (Università degli Studi di Pisa) and took his PhD in Environmental Sciences from the Università degli Studi di Parma. His research interests focus on the ecology and phytogeography of Mediterranean, Submediterranean, and Alpine territories and has carried out work (in co-operation with the Universities of Cagliari, Catania, Rome and Milan) on human impact assessment, environmental restoration, syntaxonomical surveys, effectiveness studies of environmental and bioclimatic indexes, working with geologists, geomorphologists, pedologists, hydrobiologists, zoologists, chemists, and engineers. Dr. Guarino has published a monograph, contributed to over twenty refereed articles and won two awards for his writing. He is a member of the Italian Botanical Society, of OPTIMA (an international organization for Mediterranean plant taxonomy), and of the Italian Ecological Society.

Michael Metcalfe holds a BA in Classics & History (St. Mary's University College), an MA in Ancient History (University College London) and completed his PhD (2006) on the social relations between Greek communities on the western coastline of Asia Minor: 'Reaffirming regional identity: cohesive institutions and local interactions in Ionia 386-129 BC'. Research interests include: regional history in the Hellenistic period, Greek epigraphy, the Hellenization and Romanization of central Asia Minor, and the history of western Sicily from the 8th to 2nd centuries BC. He has several articles in press, and is currently working on the publication of a substantial number of inscriptions recorded by a British archaeological expedition to the eastern Mediterranean in the early 19th century.
