This course is designed for students wishing to learn or improve the basic techniques of figure and object drawing. During the program, students will be introduced to all the fundamental principles and elements of drawing as well as major techniques and media. These include: measurement and proportion, cross-referencing, tone, contour, composition, mark-making, perspective and texture, with media being pencil, charcoal, conté and ink.
Each lesson has a specific aim and forms part of a progressive build up of skills. Lessons are supplemented by slide lectures including both old master as well as modern and contemporary works. Lessons will be conducted partly in the studio but the emphasis of the course is drawing from Syracuse, in the museums, streets and the architecture of the city, so that practical information serves to translate the historical riches of what the city offers. Drawings done on-site will be in sketchbooks, whereas work in class may be larger in scale.
Requirements: Foundation students or students with drawing experience.
