For Sophomores - Study Abroad Intent FormAll students who intend to study abroad must submit a form by February 1 of their sophomore year. 1. Why do I have to submit an Intent Form? Our office needs to balance the number of students who go abroad fall and spring semesters. By submitting your form, you are indicating your semester preference. You may not get your preference, but all qualified students will be offered a semester to study abroad. 2. I'm not sure if I want to study abroad or not. Should I still hand in a form? Yes! You are not committed to study abroad by submitting a form. However, not 3. I'm not sure where I want to go yet... what should I say on my form? List the location(s) you're considering. You are not committed to the destination you put on the form. 4. I want to study abroad during the spring semester. I heard spring is harder to get. Normally, about 60% of students request spring. That means about 10% of students will be reassigned to the fall semester. If you have a valid reason that you must go in a particular semester (ex: academic requirements, athletic commitments), be sure to mention it on the form. 5. I don't have the required 2.8 cumulative GPA. Should I submit a form anyway? If you're close to a 2.8, or think you will be soon, or have special circumstances, submit one. You will probably need to write an appeal to the study abroad committee. 6. When will I find out which semester I've been assigned? Everyone who submits a form will receive an e-mail with the full list of assignments by February 20. This will help you to make plans for housing during your junior year. 7. So if I'm on the list, I'm definitely approved to study abroad, right? No, you still have to apply for a program and be accepted. You still have to meet the requirements for GPA, good social standing, etc. 8. What happens after I submit my Intent Form? After you receive your semester assignment, you will have to apply for study abroad. That's a separate process. Students going abroad in Fall need to start right away, since application deadlines are usually March 15 (earlier in some cases). |
