Focus on Jamaica Fairfield University Study Abroad - Your Passport to the World
January 3-14, 2007
Fairfield University is pleased to offer this special onsite experience of Jamaica and its culture. The Blue Mountains and white, sandy beaches, lush tropical foliage, and gentle breezes make Jamaica a paradise; the hospitable people and the rich history of the island make this trip memorable. The program is based in Ocho Rios, a town that stretches along a beautiful bay on the north side of the island. You’ll spend an afternoon exploring the scenic Green Grotto Caves, which have provided shelter for Arawak Indians (Tainos) and runaway slaves over the years. You’ll also spend a day visiting historical sites in the capital city of Kingston. A free afternoon is allotted for exploration on your own.
Fairfield University is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, which credits schools and colleges in the six New England states.
IL 298 Internship in International Studies Students accept placements with local organizations, government agencies, or non-profit organizations in positions with an international component. Interns learn to apply knowledge acquired in their course of study to real-world situations. Completion of the internship requires regular meetings with the supervising faculty member, submission of a work log, and one paper. There are daily lectures on the history, culture, politics, and economy of the island. These lectures provide the foundation for the onsite learning at the internships.
Sample internship placements include: a soup kitchen, an orphanage for disabled children, a home for disabled adolescents, and other Catholic service agencies. 3 credits

Faculty
Terry-Ann Jones (Ph.D., University of Miami, 2005), is assistant professor of sociology at Fairfield University. A native of Jamaica, she spent her formative years there, after which she migrated to Toronto and completed her B.A. at York University. Her doctoral dissertation, “Comparative Diasporas: Jamaicans in South Florida and Toronto,” compares Jamaican immigrants in the two metropolitan areas, examining the racial and ethnic setting and labor markets of the two areas, and the immigration policies of the United States and Canada. Her areas of research and teaching interest are in international migration, particularly movement between the Caribbean and North America.
