Chapter 2. Traveling Abroad

Flying to Ireland

Since students are often traveling from different locations in the U.S. and have different travel needs, arranging a group flight to Ireland is usually not possible. Many students do make plans to travel together, and find this a fun and convenient way to start the program.

Your destination is Shannon Airport, which is about 90 minutes by bus from Galway.

We suggest STA Travel, the world's largest student travel agency. Call them at 877-777-8717 and tell them you are a Fairfield student. If you buy your airfare from STA, you will automatically receive a free ISIC card. Naturally, you should shop around and compare before purchasing your ticket.

Please keep in mind that Fairfield University is not responsible for air travel or reservations; it is up to you to book your travel plans and to ensure timely arrival in Ireland. We advise you to book as early to get the best price.

On departure day, arrive at the airport at least three hours before the flight is scheduled to leave. It can take quite a while for everyone to check in, and recent security developments often result in long lines.

Keep us informed
When you make your air travel plans, please e-mail us and give us your flight information (date, airline, flight number, and arrival time) so that we can advise the International Office at NUIG.

Getting from Shannon to Galway
It's quite simple. Buses run regularly from Shannon Airport to Galway. When you arrive, simply go to the Information Desk, where you can find out about the time, fare, and location of the bus stop (immediately outside the airport). When you arrive in Galway, you can get a cab from the bus station to your apartment.
