Chapter 10: Housing

All students participating in the Fairfield program reserve their own housing. You have a number of options, including homestays. Homestays can be arranged by contacting our office. Students are responsible for paying all deposits, rents, etc. directly to their housing provider.

Apartments

Student apartments, by far the most popular option, are located in Galway City, usually within a 20-minute walk to the school. While the distances are generally walkable, there is city bus service for times when you'd rather ride. You should remember that Galway is a city, and if you've always lived in the suburbs, you'll need to give yourself a chance to adapt to city living.  You'll find that all the necessities, including groceries stores, are within a short walk or ride from your apartment.

Much of the student housing in Galway is quite new, and you will find the quality quite high. Apartments tend to be very comfortable and equipped with all the expected modern conveniences, including washer/dryer. All are fully furnished and equipped with pots and pans, dishes and cutlery. Check each apartment's website for full information on what is included.

Recommended Housing

Please start early and familiarize yourself with the housing options. You should reserve your spot as early as possible; demand for student housing in Galway is very high!

Electricity

The European electrical system is different from that in the United States. Do not bring appliances from home. This includes hairdryers. They will not work well (even if you bring a converter) and will eventually short out. You can buy a reasonably priced hair dryer and other electrical necessities in Galway and share the cost with your roommates.

For laptops, it's a bit different. Contact your retailer or the manufacturer for information on what is needed to use your computer in Europe. You will probably need a 220-volt surge protector and an adapter plug for Ireland. But be sure to check first!

Storage

NUIGalway cannot provide any facilities for you to store belongings before, during, or after the semester. You can check with the management at your apartment to see if they will store items. Alternately, belongings can be stored at most European train stations for a daily or hourly fee while traveling.
