Italian Language for 6 credits
Credit hours 6
Contact hours 90
This class meets for 6 hours a week and is divided into 3 levels. The overall aim is for students to master the four cornerstones of language learning: comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Learning the Italian language is acquired in context. At each language level, the course is enriched with an introduction to all aspects of Italian culture, with an emphasis on contemporary Italy. The beginning levels concentrate on developing speaking and listening skills. The focus of the intermediate level is on more advanced grammatical forms, reading and analysis of texts, writing short paragraphs, and acquisition of a more complex vocabulary. The advanced level further develops all of the skills practiced in the lower levels. Emphasis is on the student's oral communication and ability to comprehend and comment on newspaper articles and literary passages.
Prerequisites: Students entering at the intermediate level or above are required to take a placement test.
Each of the three levels represents the sum of two 3-credit levels, as follows:
LA IS IB 165 = LA IS IB 101 + LA IS II 201
LA IS II 265 = LA IS II 250 + LA IS II 280
LA IS IA 365 = LA IS IA 301 + LA IS IA 350
For the content of the levels, please refer to the 3-credit course descriptions.
