First Year Student Living and Learning Communities

What is a Living and Learning Community?

Living and Learning communities (LLC) are floors that will provide students with specialized support and attention, focusing on both social and academic aspects of student life, as well as the opportunity to collaborate and interact with faculty and administrators on a daily basis. Each week there will be unique programming and activities for these students to enjoy.

Fairfield University is pleased to announce its Living and Learning Communities (LLC) for the 2008-2009 academic year. Each community has a specially designated floor in the residence halls. This year we will have two LLC’s:

Healthy Living

The Healthy Living Community (HLC) provides students with the choice to live in an environment free of alcohol and tobacco use. The HLC also gives the students a chance to practice a healthy lifestyle including good nutrition and exercise.

Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

The Women in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (WiSTEM) Living and Learning Community was created to provide services and activities to help support women pursuing their studies in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics, while building community beyond the traditional academic boundaries. The program also emphasizes connections with other women in related fields and between undergraduates, faculty, and female professionals outside academia.

Why participate in a Living and Learning Community?

This is an outstanding opportunity if you want to make college a multi-dimensional experience. LLCs connect first year students with their passion and help create a link between their living experiences in the residence halls and their academic experiences.

What are some of the benefits of Living and Learning Communities?

  • In-hall tutoring
  • Opportunities to interact outside of the classroom with faculty, staff, and professionals from different departments
  • Get involved through on and off campus activities, such as field trips and service trips
  • Special events each semester
  • Develop a supportive network with faculty, staff, and alumni
  • Live in a close knit community with people who have the same interests and build deeper community connections
  • Skill enhancement
  • Peer study groups

What do some of the past residents have to say?

It was a great little community," Every time you have a lab, you have these small questions and it's usually on a weekend and it's so nice to be able to just go and knock on the next door and get the answer. When you're on the floor, everyone is available."

Carol Cirota '09, Biology (WiSTEM)

"I am so glad that I chose to live on this floor for my freshman year. I met most of my friends this year on this floor! We always hung out in the lounge and always had good clean fun with playing board games, watching movies and TV, and so many other awesome good times there! It helped build such a great community of nice friends. Everyone said that our floor had to be one of the most unified floors on campus because we did everything together!"
