Galina Elizarova
Dean of the School of Foreign Languages
Herzen State Pedagogical University

Dr. Elizarova has taught at Herzen since 1988, and has been Dean of the School of Foreign Languages since 2001. Previously, she was Head of the Department of English as a Foreign Language for Natural Sciences, and Instructor of English at Kurgan State Pedagogical University. Throughout her career at Herzen, Dr. Elizarova has been active in the American Studies program, conducting lectures and seminars on how to incorporate American culture into the classroom of English courses in secondary schools. She has been instrumental in developing a system of interactive cross-cultural orientations targeted at preparing Russian students and faculty for American culture. Dr. Elizarova has written numerous publications including "Cultural Linguistics," "A cultural component of American English vocabulary and the communicative functions of the language," and "Incorporating a Cultural component into ELT: Culturally Specific Concepts of 'Action' and 'Responsibility'."

Galina Elizarova received her Doctorate from Herzen State Pedagogical University in English Linguistics.

Alexey Feldt
Dean of the Faculty of History and Associate Professor of History
Pomor State University

Dr. Feldt has been Dean and Professor of the History Department since 1995. Previously, he served as Assistant Professor of History at Arkhangelsk State Pedagogical Institute, and teacher of history at a secondary school located in the Onega, Arkhangelsk region. He has published a number of articles, including "The American Liberal Public and Soviet Union (1939-1941) Foreign Policy of USA in first half of XXth Century," "Alternatives to Revolutionary Process in Countries of Western Europe and USA at the beginning of the 20th Century," and "Teaching of U.S. Foreign Policy in Russia: A Difficult Way to Mutual Understanding." Dr. Feldt was a participant in the Fulbright program "Foundation of U.S. Foreign Policy" Summer Institute at the University of Delaware in 2000. He has also been a visiting fellow at the High Professional School in Kiel, Germany, Dundee University in Scotland, and Umea University in Sweden.

Alexey Feldt received his doctorate from Herzen University in history.

Mark Johnson
Assistant Professor of History
Colorado College

Dr. Johnson has been Assistant Professor at Colorado College since 1995. Previously he was Instructor of History at Rhodes College, and Adjunct Professor of Education at Columbia University's Teachers College. He has authored a number of works including Strengthening Russian Democracy through Civic Education, "Russian Education Reform in the 1990s," "From Delinquency to Counterrevolution: Subcultures of Soviet Youth and the Emergence of Stalinist Pedagogy in the 1930s," and the forthcoming book A Legacy at Risk: Globalization and the Systematic Crisis of Post-Soviet Education. In addition, Dr. Johnson has been a consultant to Carnegie Corporation of New York on development of new grant programs in support of higher education and research in the NIS, member of academic review panel for NIS College and University Partnership Program, and outside evaluator for USIA assessment of the education and cultural exchanges funded by the Freedom Support Act.

Mark Johnson graduated with honors from University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.A. in history. He received a Masters, M.Phil., and Ph.D. in history at Columbia University.

Anna Karpenko
Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy and Logic
Coordinator of Information Program, Baltic Center for Advanced Studies and Education
Kaliningrad State University

Ms. Karpenko has been Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Information Programs since 2001. Previously, she was the International Road Transport Manager at the Russian-Dutch Joint-Venture "East-West," and Operator at the Kaliningrad Communications Center. Ms. Karpenko has written a number of articles in both English and German including "Opus Postumum by I. Kant: History and Difference from Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science," "Consciousness Activity in Developing Al Systems," and "American Philosophy of Mind in Cultural Context." She has taught several courses including New Information technologies in Humanities, Introduction to Philosophy of Mind, and Seminars on History of Philosophy.

Anna Karpenko graduated from Kaliningrad State University with a degree in Physics, specializing in Radio Physics and Electronics. She received a degree as Philosopher-Researcher also from Kaliningrad State University.

Katherine Kidd
Director of International Studies and Assistant Professor of International Studies
Fairfield University

Dr. Kidd has been Director and Assistant Professor of International Studies at Fairfield University since 1997. Previously, she was Director of Global Studies and Assistant Professor of Political Science at Sacred Heart University, and Director of Support Services for the Department of Continuing Education at Cedar Crest College. A strong advocate for study abroad, Dr. Kidd is Chair of the International Education Section of the International Studies Association. In addition to the NISCUPP program, she has been active in a number of other programs, including her role as campus representative for Fulbright and NSEP Scholarship programs, Co-director on grants from Rockefeller Brothers Foundation on Technology and International Studies, and Gladys Kreible Delmas Foundation on American Studies in St. Petersburg, responsible administrator for FIPSE-CAPES Brazil Consortium Grant. Dr. Kidd was selected as Fairfield University Teacher of the Year (2001-2002).

Katherine Kidd graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a B.A. in History and German. She received an A.M. from Harvard University in Soviet Studies, and a Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania in International Relations.

David McFadden
Professor and Chair, Department of History
Fairfield University

Dr. McFadden has taught at Fairfield University since 1990, and has been Director of the Russian and East European Studies Program since 1995. In 1998 as a Fulbright scholar, Dr. McFadden taught classes in U.S. History and American Studies at Herzen State Pedagogical University, in St. Petersburg, Russia. From 2000-2002, he was awarded a grant, entitled "American Studies through Russian and American Eyes," which culminated in an article. This grant was issued jointly through the Delemas Foundation/USIS/Fairfield/Herzen University for the American Studies institute in St. Petersburg. Dr. McFadden has authored numerous publications including "The Ghandi Diary of Rufus Jones," "From Quaker Service to Quaker Presence: Quakers in Soviet Russia, 1917-1921," and "Did Wilson Have a Russian Policy?" Recent courses taught include Twentieth Century United States, the West and the World: Historical and Cultural Perspectives, Russia's Road to Revolution, 1689-1917, and a seminar on History of the Cold War.

David McFadden graduated with honors from University of Denver, with a B.A. in history. He received an M.A. and Ph. D. from University of California Berkeley in History.

Julie Kay Mueller
Associate, The Davis Center for Russian Studies
Harvard University

Dr. Mueller has been an Associate at Harvard University since 2000. Previous to this position, she was an Assistant Professor of History at Colby College, and a Research Scholar at the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies at the Woodrow Wilson Center. Dr Mueller has authored a numerous publications including "Soviet Journalists: Cadres or Professionals?" "Staffing Newspapers and Training Journalists in Early Soviet Russia," and the forthcoming "Early Soviet Press and NEP Civil Society, 1917-1932." She has won a number of scholarships and fellowships including three IREX Research Grants, a Mellon Dissertation Fellowship from the University of California Berkeley, and Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education.

Julie Mueller graduated with a B.A. in political philosophy from Swathmore College. She received a M.A. and Ph.D. in history from the University of California at Berkeley.

Vladimir Noskov
Chair, Department of General History
Herzen State Pedagogical University

Dr. Noskov has been Chair of and Professor in the General History Department of Herzen State since 1996. Previous to this, he was a researcher in the Department of General History of the Historical Institute, at the Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg Branch, since 1984. He currently maintains the position of Lead Researcher of this Department, a position which he has held since 1995. Dr. Noskov has written numerous publications, including Dictionary of American History, for which he was awarded a research grant, and Institutions if Power and U.S. Foreign Policy, 1901-1913. He has received honors and awards from the Russian Foundation for Fundamental Studies, Russian Foundation of Humanitarian Investigations, and the Ministry of Science and Technology. Recent courses taught include History of International Relations in Modern Times, Actual Problems of World History, History of Russian-American Relations, and Russian Philosophy of History in the Silver Age.

Vladimir Noskov graduated from Leningrad State University with a degree in history. He received Doctorate Degrees in history from Herzen State Pedagogical University and St. Petersburg State University.

Anna Rodicheva
Senior Lecturer, English Language Department
Cherepovets State University

Ms. Rodicheva has been Senior Lecturer at Cherepovets State University since 1993. Previously she was an English language instructor at several secondary schools. She has taught a number of courses at the university level including, Intermediate and Advanced Grammar/Conversation, Economic and Political Geography, Education Systems in Great Britain and in the USA, and Theoretical Phonetics. In 2001 she was a participant in the State Department's International Visitor Program, and from 1996-1998 participated a joint project of Sunderland (UK), Koblenz (Germany) and Cherepovets Universities.

Anna Rodicheva graduated from Tver State University with Bachelors and Masters Degrees in English and Germany Literature. She has done post-graduate work at Moscow University of Russian Academy of Education.

Valentina Smorgunova
Dean and Professor of Faculty of Social Sciences
Head of Department of Political Science
Herzen State Pedagogical University

Dr. Smorgunova has been a part of the faculty at Herzen since 1981. As Dean, she established the center of International Education "Russian Studies" at Herzen. Through out her career, Dr. Smorgunova has been a visiting professor and scholar at a number of institutions including Columbia University, Hong-Kong University, University of Alabama, University of Helsinki, George Washington University, Stanford University, Oxford University, and Vaxjo Univeristy in Sweden. She has taught a variety of courses including Intellectual and Cultural History of Russia in the 20th Century, Comparative Education, and Civic Education. She has published numerous works including "Phenomenon of Political Knowledge," "Preparation of the teachers of History of a New Generation," "American Political Science and its Influence on the Development of Russian Political Science and Civic Education," and "The Principles of Construction of the System of Political Education in Modern Pedagogical Universities."

Valentina Smorgunova graduated from Leningrad State University with a Masters Degree in philosophy. She has received a Masters and Doctorate Degree at Herzen State Pedagogical University in philosophy.

Timothy Snyder
Dean, College of Arts and Sciences
Fairfield University

Dr. Snyder has been Dean at Fairfield since 2001. Previously, he held a variety of positions at Georgetown University, including Dean of Science, Department Chair and Professor in the Computer Science Department. He has also taught at Princeton University's Program in Statistics and Operations Research and Department of Civil Engineering, and University of Toledo's Department of Mathematics. As professor, he taught a number of courses including Mathematic Methods of Engineering, Statistical Methods for Industrial Processes, and Data Structures. Dr. Snyder has authored a number of publications including "Equidistribution in All Dimensions of Worst-Case Point Sets for the Traveling Salesman Problem," "Convex Hulls of Random Walks," "On the Exact Location of Steiner Points in General Dimensions," and a forthcoming major article "Computers" for Microsoft Encarta 2002 CD-ROM.

Timothy Snyder graduated from the University of Toledo with a B.S. and M.S in mathematics, and B.A. in psychology. He graduated from Princeton University with a M.S. and Ph. D. in applied and computational mathematics.

Natalia Tchitcherina
Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages
Associate Professor
Pomor State University

Dr. Tchitcherina has been a part of the faculty at Pomor State University since 1991, and Dean of Foreign Languages since 1999. Previously she was a teacher of English at a secondary school. She has participated in exchange visits and working groups in the US, Sweden, and Norway. She has participated in a number of international projects including "American Studies through Russian and American Eyes," "Building Cultures in the Barents Region, and served as coordinator for the Tempus project proposal "International Dimensions of Higher Education in North-West Russia." In her courses, Dr. Tchitcherina's focuses on English language teaching, and authored "Developing Cross-cultural awareness in ELT."

Natalia Tchitcherina graduated from Pomor State University with a degree in English and German. She received a Doctorate degree from Herzen State University in language pedagogy.
