Introduction

Men's rowing at Fairfield is a growing sport and is involved in serious competition. Fairfield Men's Crew Team subscribes to the Jesuit ideal of service to others, while nurturing a sound mind and body.

  • Currently classified as a club organization, the team commits trains and competes on a varsity level.
  • After graduating many key members in the past two years, the team's goal is to restore our roster to 40 rowers and coxswains this fall with some well-rounded individuals.
  • The team includes rowers and coxswains all levels of ability, and welcomes those new to the sport as well as experienced athletes.

About Rowing and Coxing

  • Crew is a team-oriented sport where dedication and commitment are essential.
  • While in season we practice on the water Monday thru Friday in the afternoons and usually compete over the weekends (either Saturday or Sunday).
  • In the off-seasons, on campus practice is held in the afternoons Monday thru Friday, with most weekends free of commitment.
  • A team commitment is required to attend all practices, competitions and team meetings.
  • Crew places significant demands on ones personal time and life, making personal discipline and time management of the utmost importance.

Rowing Schedule

  • The Head Race season begins in September and lasts until early November, and includes regattas such as the Head of the Fish, Head of the Charles, and the Dowling Cup Invitational.
  • Winter training takes place on campus, on ergs and in the weight-room.
  • The Sprint Race season is kicked off during spring break with a weeklong training program in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and ends with the Dad Vail Regatta, held in early May.

Facilities and Equipment

  • We share a boathouse with our women's varsity crew team on the Housatonic River in Shelton, CT, twenty minutes from campus.
  • In addition to a new Vespoli 8+ and a brand new Resolute 4+ racing shell, we own three more 8+'s, including a lightweight boat, and two other 4+'s.
  • In spring 2004 we purchased a new trailer, and currently have access to a University owned truck for races and spring break.
  • In the winter we train on brand new Concept II ergs and have access to the varsity weight room in the Walsh Athletic Center.

Benefits
The Fairfield Men's Crew Team offers a unique atmosphere in which to develop as an individual and as part of a highly integrated team. Despite the sacrifices that come with the sport, the benefits are most rewarding.

  • The team atmosphere is one of a kind.
  • The feeling of achievement, camaraderie, friendship and impeccable physical fitness.
  • The thrill of competition against nationally ranked programs.
  • Hard work and success are equally matched with fun and excitement both on and off the water.
  • These examples are just part of what makes the rowing experience at Fairfield University exceptional.
