University College at Fairfield University offers "How to" workshop on appraisals and appraisers
(Posted on May 16, 2008) The popular PBS series, "Antiques Roadshow" is an illuminating exercise in determining the market value of an owner's particular "treasure." Now, you can expand your own knowledge of the subtleties of the appraisal process as a customer or as an appraiser by taking advantage of University College at Fairfield University's first workshop in a series of collaborations with the American Society of Appraisers. "Valuing Personal Property: Appraisals and Appraisers," is a full-day workshop held Saturday, June 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with lunch included. Sandra J. Tropper, ASA, Accredited Senior Appraiser of personal property and an expert appraiser of fine art leads the workshop. The fee is $79.
There are many reasons why one might want or need to hire an appraiser and a great deal can depend on obtaining a professional appraisal. Of the possibilities, the most common are: insurance coverage or claims, charitable donations, buying or selling property, estates and business liquidation.

- The definition of what is an appraisal
- How to determine the qualifications of an accredited appraiser
- What to expect from an appraisal
- How to hire an appraiser
- The difference between appraisal and authentication
- The knowledge a qualified appraiser needs to acquire for certification
- Professional standards as defined by The Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) including ethics, objectivity, public trust and competency.
