Rev. William J. Kennedy, S.J.

Rev. William J. Kennedy, S.J., age 74, of the Fairfield Jesuit Community, Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT. died on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Yale-New Haven Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Father Kennedy was born on October 15, 1934, in Lynn, Massachusetts, the son of the late William J. and Sarah (Moore) Kennedy. He entered the Society of Jesus on August 14, 1952, at Shadowbrook, the Jesuit Novitiate, at Lenox, MA. After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest by Richard J. Cardinal Cushing, on June 12, 1965, at Weston College, Weston, MA. In addition to receiving degrees in philosophy and theology, he also earned a M.Ed. in Guidance from Marquette University.

Father Kennedy's apostolic assignments include serving as Guidance Counselor at Cheverus High School, Portland, ME (1967-73); as College Chaplain and Director of Counseling at St. Joseph's College, North Windham, ME (1973-79), and as Assistant Director of Admissions at Fairfield University (1980-85). More recently, he served as Assistant Pastor at two parishes in the Diocese of Bridgeport, at Holy Rosary in Bridgeport (1985-1991) and at St. Michael's in Greenwich (1992-2007).

In addition to his brother Jesuits, Father Kennedy is survived by his sisters, Barbara Haggerty, of Revere, MA, and Carmen Garay, of Milford, CT; four nieces, Mary Ellen Kippenberger, Barbara D'Eramo, Peggy Haggerty, and Angelique Garay; three nephews, Michael Haggerty, Thomas Haggerty, and James Haggerty; and eleven great niece and nephews.
