Choosing a Minor

It is not necessary to have a minor, but many of Fairfield's students do. Minors are composed of 5 (or sometimes 6) related courses that students can take to pursue another academic interest (sometimes an interdisciplinary one) or to complement their major program. In many cases, a course can count toward both the core and a minor, so fitting in a minor is not as difficult as it may seem.

Students deciding on a minor can explore the same questions for choosing a major. To declare a minor, students should follow these steps:

• Obtain the necessary form from the Registrar's Office
• Meet with the department chair or coordinator of the minor to discuss course selection and get the form signed
• Get approval from the dean of the school he or she is majoring in

Once the signatures are obtained, the student gets a copy of the form. Advisors and advisees should review that form at each advising session, to be sure students are on track with minor as well as major requirements.
