New Media letter CFM 11 - Art and Language of Film

Film is story-telling with pictures, and filmmakers are artists who use the medium of film to speak the truths they see about reality. The stories films tell may be funny or tragic, full of adventure, or deeply reflective, but great filmmakers always speak to experiences of human living. The course provides an overview of film: its history as an art form and as a business, its technological development, and its special ability to tell stories visually.

Students will write a short screenplay and produce a short (video) film as members of a small film crew. The films screened in class and the screenplays and films produced for the course will focus on issues of self-identity and personal meaning. This course fulfills a history requirement of the Visual and Performing Arts core requirements and is a requirement for the major/minor.
