Course of Study for Music Education: (2)

Instrumental Practicum:
In addition to piano proficiency, music teacher candidates should have a primary instrument, or voice, and must acquire a basic, working knowledge of string, woodwind, percussion, and brass instruments. This basic knowledge will be taught through credit-bearing, one-on-one instruction and the University will provide the instruments.

One-credit/semester performing groups:
MU 55 Varsity Band
MU 255 Orchestra
MU 256 Jazz Ensemble
MU 257 Chamber Singers

Education Requirements:
SO 162 Race, Gender and Ethnic Relations ñ double counts in University core requirements (Social science) US History One semester survey course that covers at least 50 years ñ double counts in University core requirements (History)
ED 241 Educational Psychology - double counts in University core requirements
ED 329 Philosophy of Education - double counts in University core requirements (Applied Ethics)
ED 350 Special Learners in the Classroom
ED 381 Directed Observation and Supervised Student Teaching (senior year)
ED 382 Student Teaching Seminar (senior year, concurrent with ED 381)

Minority Teacher Incentive Grants:
These grants provide $5,000/year for two years of full-time study in teacher preparation programs, usually your junior and senior years, at a Connecticut college or university. You may also receive up to $2,500/year for four years to help pay off college loans if you teach in a Connecticut public school. To qualify you must be of African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian/American or Native American heritage and be nominated by Dr. Sandra Billings, Director of Certification Programs.
