Course of Study for Music Education:

Students wishing to be certified to teach music need to complete a 30-credit music major and the education minor. In addition, students must have a proficiency in piano, which can be achieved while at Fairfield through private lessons.

The Music Major includes courses in history, theory, world music, and conducting and may include:

MU 101 History of Jazz (fulfills core requirement for US Diversity course)
MU 103 Early Survey of Musical Styles
MU 104 Late Survey of Musical Styles
MU 112 Music of Black Americans (fulfills core requirement for US Diversity course)
MU 120 History of American Song
MU 122 World Music History and Ensemble (fulfills core requirement for World Diversity course)
MU 125 Women in Music
MU 126 History of Choral Music
MU 201 Critical Issues in American Popular Music: Blues to Hip Hop
MU 150 Music Theory and Composition I
MU 155 Jazz Theory, Keyboard Harmony, and Improvisation
MU 250 Music Theory and Composition I
MU 301 Advanced Music Theory and Composition
Choral Conducting
Orchestral Conducting

All of the four method courses are required:
MU 360 Elementary General Music Methods (counts towards major)
MU 361 Choral Conducting Methods (counts towards major)
MU 362 Secondary Instrumental Methods (counts towards major)
MU 363 Music Technology for Music Educators (part of education minor)
