Music Education:
Developing excellent teacher musicians
Music Education is brand new to Fairfield and was given final certification by the State of Connecticut in Fall 2006. We developed a brand new certification program because teaching music to others meshes beautifully with the University's mission and goals.
Our goal is to provide the breadth and depth of training necessary to meet the demands of today's music educators, as well as the needs of each of our students. We will provide you with the necessary tools for successful teaching: intensive training as a musician, theoretical and practical training as a teacher, and a strong liberal arts education.
What else does our program have to offer?
- Music education faculty who are still working in the field
- A curriculum developed around the three artistic processes: Create, Perform, Respond
- No separate application or audition
- A small cohort of students who will receive ongoing support from all faculty
- Close proximity to New York City and New Haven, allowing easy access to performing groups of many styles and cultures
- The ability to cross certify in other content areas
- A program embedded in the Liberal Arts
- Opportunities to conduct real performing groups
- Four years of field work opportunities in urban, suburban, and rural schools
- Pedagogical mastery, artistic development, and content expertise
- Methods classes are offered in the afternoon to make them available to a wide range of people
- Undergraduate and graduate courses
