Music Education

Music Education Treble ClefStudents who want to teach music to K-12 students can receive their certification at Fairfield. The requirements, which are set by the State of Connecticut, require students to complete a music major and an education minor.

Students interested in music education will need to schedule an audition as part of the admission process. Please contact Dr. Laura Nash, LNash@mail.fairfield.edu, to set up your audition.

The music major is:

MU 104 - Late Survey of Musical Styles
MU 122 - World Music Ensemble
One additional 100-level music history course
MU 150 - Theory and Composition I
MU 250 - Theory and Composition II
MU 301 - Independent Study in Conducting
MU 360 - Elementary General Music Methods
MU 361 - Choral Conducting Methods
MU 362 - Secondary Instrumental Methods
Practicum in all instrumental groups (up to 8 credits)
Piano until proficient

The education minor is:

MU 363 - Music Technology for Educators
ED 241 - Educational Psychology*
ED 329 - Philosophy of Education**
ED 350 - Special Learners in the Classroom
ED 382 - Student Teaching Seminar
SO 162 - Race, Gender, and Ethnic Relations*
History - Survey that covers 50 years of more of US History***

* - these courses double count and fulfill the Social Science core requirements
** - this course double counts and fulfills the Applied Ethics core requirement
*** - this course double counts as one of the History core requirements
