The cover of Flatland, a mathematical story of a mind expanding. |
|
|
To the inhabitants of space in general
And H.C. in particular
This work is dedicated
By a humble native of Flatland
In the hope that
Even as he was initiated into the mysteries
Of three dimensions
Having been previously conversant
With only two
So the citizens of that celestial region
May aspire yet higher and higher
To the secrets of four five or even six dimensions
Thereby contributing
To the enlargement of the imagination
And the possible development
Of that most rare and excellent gift of modesty
Among the superior races
Of solid humanity
Dedication of Flatland, a Romance of Many Dimensions, by Edwin A. Abbott 1838-1926

Profile
Christopher Miller
Mathematics major
"This summer I'm participating in a National Science Foundation program on algebraic graph theories, a project I plan to develop into an independent study next semester. I recently spoke with my advisor about what I could do with a math major after graduation. Mathematics is a beautiful subject. It applies to so many fields. I could do actuarial work, go into publishing, or apply to graduate school and do research. My favorite course so far has been Real Analysis. It's rigorous and builds up all of the theorems of mathematics. You have to make a lot of the conclusions yourself. But that's what makes the course - and the program - exciting. If you're interested in studying mathematics, stick with it. By keeping yourself open, it will eventually enthrall you and you'll love it." |
